When I first pulled a track from Tame Impala's Lonerism, the instant thing that struck me was not just its psychedelic feel, but its unmistakable lo-fi character, an audible sense that something had been deliberately degraded, like a tape running a fraction slower than intended.

That lo-fi edge isn't accidental.

It results from a handful of very specific effects, tape-style saturation that gently clamps peaks, a touch of mild distortion that gives certain frequencies an edgy bite, and subtle phasing that makes the groove feel as if it's shifting through a dreamlike space, all layered together with tight intent to support Parker's sonic vision.

Tape saturation doesn't simply add warmth.

It actively shapes the waveform by applying nonlinear compression and generating odd-number harmonics that occupy mids while subtly masking harsh transients.

I mean, again, just accolades on top of accolades.

Their next album, Lonerism, October 5th, 2012.

Yeah.

They had started working on this while they were wrapping up the previous album, recorded it in Perth, Australia, and Paris, France, where Kevin was living at the time to work on some other projects.

After playing in bands around Perth in his teens, Kevin launched Tame Impala in 2007 as a home recording project.

Signing to Modular Records in 2008, he formed a touring band to perform the tracks live ahead of releasing his acclaimed debut album Innerspeaker in 2010.

By the time his Grammy-nominated second album Lonerism appeared in 2012, Tame Impala had become a huge critical and commercial success.

While releasing the albums Currents in 2015 and The Slow Rush in 2020, Kevin has also shared his talents as a performer and as a producer with artists including Justice, Gorillaz, Thundercat, and Dua Lipa.

The fifth Tame Impala album, Dead Beat, arrived in October 2025 with the singles Dracula and Loser becoming worldwide hits.

Today, I'm at home in Morden South London, and I'm joined by Kevin from his LA studio.
