246: The State of Nintendo w/ Special Guest Brian Altano
B
17:56Brian AltanoGUEST
And so that was sort of a relief, I guess, in a way that it was like, if all of us are going at the same time, then... they're clearly trying something new or trying something different and i support whatever they're doing i'm cheering for all the people still working there but i was like i need to keep doing the thing that i love doing and that's making shows and we had hundreds and thousands of people reach out every single day being like please make a new nintendo show please make new video game podcasts and we just immediately were like all right so let's figure something out and you know we hopped on some meetings came up with some very bad names very stupid names and then um we landed on x button which is i think stupid in a good way because it's one of those buttons for on every single controller you're like where is that one on this one again oh yeah i remember like the first time you saw it on like a super nintendo controller you're like what is what are you and there's a y button what is happening yeah So, yeah, it was, you know, we just kind of knew immediately, like, we wanted to do this thing that we love doing, that we know we're good at, and we know that people want it from us.

And so, you know, I worked on Nintendo Voice Chat at IGN for years with so many different hosts, Jose Otero, Zach Ryan, Logan Plant, who's running the show now, and he is one of my favorite people on planet Earth.
B
19:14Brian AltanoGUEST
He is the one of the most... knowledgeable, talented, passionate, sweet, genuinely funny people I've ever met.
B
19:20Brian AltanoGUEST
And I think he's the show is in such great hands.

And, you know, buckle up because there's, there might be, you know, Nintendo is modernizing this game as best they can.
B
62:59Brian AltanoGUEST
And from, you know, I read and, you know, watched Logan Plant's previews.
B
63:03Brian AltanoGUEST
It sounds like a lot of the stuff they're doing really makes it feel like it's a, it's a, it's a modern game, but it is ultimately built on the skeletal remains of something from 1998.

His only minor gripe was around how the lock-on combat system works.
T
2:10Tom TateHOST
didn't have a great way to toggle between targets and that's kind of a remnant of how the game used to function so I mean that's that's emulating how this game was which really is going to capture the feel of the original but yeah I think we're used to modern combat at this point Logan Plant over at IGN had a great preview here's a quote from his preview Rays of light poke through the trees.

19:34Kit EllisHOST
Logan Plant, um, who did the IGN preview, he had a sort of an interesting analogy where, I don't, I don't know, you could say this is kind of a reach, but I thought it was interesting, where he's like...
K
19:43Kit EllisHOST
And, and Nintendo's done this before, where they approach the presentation like it's a stage play in, like, a theater.
K
19:52Kit EllisHOST
And he was like, "You know, the sets are intentionally small because you have a limited amount of space." Um, there were certain things he was doing with, like, talking about the lighting, where it's like there was almost, like, a spotlight-
