Where do you draw the line? How far would you go before saying-

It's funny, we actually did this exercise the other day.

Now, we are dipping our toes in the UK's rivers and waterways this week.

And today we're visiting the biggest body of freshwater in Northern Ireland, Loch Neagh.

Although whether you would want to dip your toes in parts of it just now is debatable.

This is the fourth summer in a row that the loch's been blighted by blue-green algal blooms.

It leaves a slimy green film on the shore and on the water and it can be devastating for wildlife and tourism.

Hot weather and pollution are Amoy's main causes and now scientists are using DNA methods to help identify exactly where that pollution comes from and how it moves across the catchment area.

BBC Northern Ireland's agriculture and environment correspondent Louise Cullen joined the research team on the southern shore of the Loch.

But it also meant that the nearest city for him, if he was wanting to go out and let his hair down, is Glasgow.

And would you believe that the people of Glasgow didn't take as kindly to his posh boy pretensions as the people of London had? No, never.

But if I say they were as dark and mysterious and fathomless as a deep loch, It's like there are layers of meaning there, right? There's depth, there's mystery, there's profundity.

There's that edge of the unknown.

There's the connotations that we have with the word Loch, especially if you're not Scottish.

You know, we think about the Loch Nix monster, like...

We think about these like deep mysteries of existence, you know, like the complete unknown.

And so when I say that, I'm like referencing a truth and a reality that is so much more vibrant and complex and multilayered than if I would just say her eyes were dark and deep.

And, and Greenock, where it suddenly becomes the Firth of Clyde, and it becomes something a bit different.

I then went to the Lochs of Galloway, 'cause they change as you head from east to west, and they have, uh, interesting stories to tell about the Industrial Revolution, and a rare fish called the vendace, and a type of sort of phytoplankton-type thing called a diatom.

So when you, when you stand...

We're standing leaning over the edge of the Thames.

But specifically with diatoms, they're interesting 'cause they've got a silica, uh, based exoskeleton, so that doesn't decay after they've died.

Ah, huh.

And so into the sediment of the Lochs of Galloway you can read the record of them.

And, um, when they stop occurring, that's a, that was a way of seeing when the waters became acidified through the, uh, through the Industrial Revolution.
