An analysis highlighted by Yale Climate Connections estimated that fossil fuel interests spent about $219 million supporting candidates in the 2024 election cycle, with roughly 88% of that spending benefiting Republicans.

The oil and gas industry also spent more than $150 million, lobbying the federal government that same year.

What the coalition may have demonstrated is that a relatively modest sum, precisely applied in low turnout elections with inexpensive, medium markets, can attract attention far beyond the size of the investment.

That is, as much a finding about the vulnerability of primary elections as it is about the political strength of clean energy.
