So this took place back in the mid-1980s.

It's actually kind of toward the end of a time period when John F. Kennedy University here in the San Francisco Bay Area had a graduate parapsychology program and I was on faculty.

So we got a call at the department from a woman.

She and her husband had moved in a few months before to an 80-year-old home in Marin County.

It was one of two homes originally built 80 years before by two Scottish immigrant brothers.

The other one was up the street from them.

So then did you, could you find like an old neighbor or someone who could help you determine who was in

But yeah, the idea that we survive, that spirit, consciousness, or you like to use the word consciousness, survives the death of the body.

The brain dies, your body's dead.

Your consciousness, for some people, sticks around and is capable of connecting with those of us that are alive, is capable of mentally, uh, cons- connecting with our consciousness, kind of mind to mind, uh, using basically ESP to do it, uh, and even providing us with an image of what we might actually see if we could actually see them, uh, what they sound like.

The personality of these people doesn't dramatically change at all after they've died, and it, it seems like it's not everyone that sticks around.

Um, in the thousands of c- reported experiences with apparitions or ghosts over the last 130-plus years in parapsychology and psychical research, the, the vast majority of them are people who see or experience a friend or a loved one, a relative, who is at the moment of death or just after, sometimes within a couple days, kind of the person's there to say goodbye, and then they never hear from them again.

That's it.

I, I've only related this, uh, story one other time.

I have a couple of things I'd like to tell you, but this is the most, um, uh, dynamic.

My mother passed away when I was 11.

And I'm in bed one night sound asleep, and something wakes me up, and there's my mother sitting on the side of the bed.

Uh, and I could see her just as clear as could be, and I went to reach out to hug her.

And she said, "No, you can't touch me." And, uh, for some reason I understood.

Um, have you researched out-of-body experiences, and if so, w- what do you feel? Is it, is it the real McCoy where people really are leaving their bodies?

Sure.

Sure.When in fact, at the root of it, it's not at all.

Um, as an example, I had one case where the family was seeing an apparition.

They had actually called us in.

They've seen the, the, the, this guy full, full-bodied popping up, uh, at the top of the stairs or in the living room trying to talk to them.

The wife actually told me that he would gesticulate, he'd talk, but we, they couldn't hear anything.

So they got really freaked out because it, it looked like the guy, the guy looked angry when in fact he was getting frustrated.

Sure.

... of her interactions?

She seemed to get a little more physical in the 1970s.

And like I said, for, for the most part, and I, I've talked to witnesses who had seen her in the '40s and the '50s, uh, even in the '60s.

And then in the '70s, a couple by the name of, uh, Pat and Dave Andrews bought the place and [clears throat] ended up living [smacks lips] in the space below the restaurant, which originally was a garage, and then was turned into an office, and then it was turned back into an apartment for them, apartment and office.

These days it's an o- actual office for the staff.

So, uh, Pat and Dave reported that while there were still sightings of her, uh, that especially Pat seemed to end up with a bond with her because she suddenly became very helpful.

Pat reported a number of instances where, uh, she would reach for a pencil or be looking for some writing implement, and it would just simply pop out of the pencil case, or, you know, the pencil holder or out of a drawer.

Mm-hmm.

Starting with hard copy, then we did many TV shows, also did many visits.

In fact, there was one point where we were doing some sit-down interviews, just talking to whoever we could on a Saturday night, so a busy Saturday night.

Joan said a lot of people in the area come on a Saturday night, so it was a good time for us to see who else might have had experiences.

Joan did ask me for a little quid pro quo, in that she knew I was a magician at the time.

I was still doing regular magic, some mentalism, but some regular magic as well.
