Liz Hyder

In Rated or Dated, we watched 2006's This Is England and all got tension belly aches.

And in this episode, I'm having a lovely time with author Liz Hyder, whose new book is called The Teller of Tall Tales, a fair moniker for Liz herself, who in this novel writes old school folk and fairy tales with a modern sensibility.

We're chatting about heavy awards, telling tales, second-person narrative, the privilege of writing for the young adult audience, and, of course, the power of stories.

As ever, there's more chat for our £5 and above Patreons and you can get involved with that at patreon.com forward slash standard issue.

Share our socials or just play us really loud at the traffic lights.

The more the merrier.

It's been a while, but I am chuffed to welcome back to Standard Issue, award-winning author and absolute smasher, Liz Hyder.

Hi.

Lots more to come this week, including Rated or Dated, in which we talk about Shane Meadows' 2006 film This Is England.

Then on Friday, Mickey has a natter with author Liz Hyder about the power of stories, grief, connection and how she became a teller of tall tales.

But on to today, because who can wait? I certainly can't.

In it, I'm talking to second time visitor to Standard Issue, the wonderful Amelia Bullmore.

On Wednesday, we're revisiting 2006's This Is England, which, unbelievably, I've never seen.

On Thursday, Hannah and I will be taking on the news and sport in the Bush Telegraph, and on Friday, Mick has a natter with author Liz Hyder about the power of stories, grief, connection... and how she became a teller of tall tales.

But back to today.

Paralympic athletes Tully Kearney and Melanie Woods are used to being recognised for their performance in the pool and on the track, but now they're being recognised for their overall contributions to sport.
