Liz, can you tell me a little bit about where the story comes from, both geographically and the sort of folklore tradition?

Yes.

So this is a story from the Philippines.

Uh, my grandfather Gutaco was a Filipino immigrant, and it's from specifically the southern parts of the Philippines.

The Philippines is made up of, like, 7,000 islands, and there's all sorts of people there from all parts of the world, and so actually there's a lot of types of stories, some of them very similar to the Grimm fairy tales you're used to, um, and some of them very different.

I would say I picked the one we're telling today because there were aspects of it that reminded me of Grimm fairy tales, but it's also very representative of the Philippines in terms of its, like, tropical location, and the places we'll visit and the people we'll meet.
