Can you talk more to Harry Bing of Chinese descent? What was the idea of that and how did that come to you?

Well, a lot of this came, and I think it actually was really great that I didn't read the book until I'd lied about reading the book to the producer.

Yes, I love that book.

I'd love to do that adaptation, of course.

Yeah, it's one of my favourites, quickly reading it.

I think, honestly, going to the book for the first time as an adult was I just, it immediately, there were a lot of things that just sprang out, like the idea that Uncle Julius was Gay's confirmed bachelor who arrives at Cadigat with his best friend, who he's been travelling with, you know, and like, oh, he's never had a girlfriend.

Like, well, we all know what that means, you know.

Do you mind expanding on what he means by that? Because it was your idea to sort of have First Nations be more of a storyline.

Mm-hmm.

And so I really, really believe in producers.

I trust their judgment and you hope that you find that creative partnership.

And, you know, I've worked with some really amazing producers, like I've worked with Joe Warner and John Molloy and...

Blackfella Films and Easy Tiger, like really great people.

But I have to say that my relationship with Chloe Rickard on this one was probably one of my favourites and best relationships that I've had as a creative collaboration.

which we then, you know, then you build with a set-up director like Lucy McClelland and, you know, that's like a powerhouse of like if you're all on the same page then you're like you're just ready to go.

I'm wondering, like, at what point then did did you pitch this to netflix or did netflix kind of pick up the idea like is it a few years ago
