Little People of America

Anywho, John set this whole thing up.

The vacation, there's the LPA, the Little People of America.

They have a convention every year.

This is where all these dudes hang out and meet each other and form these friendships and bonds.

focus on like surviving so um Yeah, I for a long time.

Well, I did try to integrate myself into the little people community, little people of America locally and.

in my national – I was about to say competitions.

That would be wild.

So I'm like, oh, this isn't even like fun.

And they all know each other because they all go to the little people conventions, the LPA conventions, Little People of America.

Although there was a horrifying scene where they're in a bar and some guy picks up one of the little dudes and like holds him like a baby.

And I'm including my own workplace.

My favorite one was LPA, that Little People of America, and they, like, diagnosed him, which I thought was very swell.

And it was also in, like, it was, it was, that was very nice.

And it was also, like, a relief because I would have thought and this is maybe a little cynical of me, that LPA specifically would have to be like, don't touch him.

Both her parents and older sister are of average height.

She was always taught to have a positive outlook, and the work she does in the entertainment industry, working with the Equity and Inclusion Department of Screen Actors Guild and AFTRA, serving as the employment chair of Little People of America, as a member of the board of advisors for the National Center on Disability and Journalism at Arizona State University, the founder of DisAbility in Media, which focuses on positive disability inclusion storytelling through social media.

All of her work is making an important difference in the lives of little people, and she's constantly out there offering motivation to various groups, children and adults.

Becky begins by telling us a bit more about her early life.

People wanna be known for their skill sets, and their physical traits or disability or any demographic they may identify with is just a part of what contributes to those traits.

By just having Billy Barty out there in the spotlight, he's proving to people that he's a human being.

I know he has since passed, but he was a founder of the organization Little People of America, and it allows the community to come together at least once a year in a different city, and we can all let our guards down and be around people just like us.

And because of that community and opportunity for us to all come together that was because of him, I think it has allowed people to thrive in their individual communities, uh, because they gain an understanding that they're not alone and that they bring meaning to this life even though we look a lot different.
