Last, but certainly in this case not least, Donny Hathaway, the renowned arranger and keyboardist on the Salty Peppers recording, That time he wasn't as well known, but another Chicago native, Hathaway was classically trained and considered a child prodigy who conquered the behind-the-scenes world of Chicago's soul before he became a solo superstar.

In fact, long before his legendary mid-1970s live albums and duets with Roberta Flack, Hathaway was a hidden mastermind shaping the sounds of Curtis Mayfield's Kirtom label, as well as Chess Records.

We've already heard about his collaborations with the Rolling Stones and the way in which he influenced Keith Richards' playing, but he's played with pretty much everyone.

Indeed, we heard him last episode on the original version of Willin' by Little Feat.

Many lists of the greatest guitarists of all time have him near the top, and he was already a hugely impressive talent.

But at this point, he was a complete unknown, the Rising Suns having split before they could release an album.

So for the next album, which saw The Magic Band credit restored, as it would remain for the rest of Beefheart's career, there was another shuffling of members.

Art Tripp returned to the drum kit to replace French, which meant there needed to be a second guitarist to play the parts he'd been playing on marimba.

Boston moved from bass to guitar, and they brought in Roy Estrada, who after the Mothers of Invention split up, had played with Little Feat on their first two albums, and who was given the Magic Band name Orejon.

Clear Spot, the album in question, is the last album the group recorded for Warner Brothers, and is generally also considered the last great album by a version of the Magic Band that had some continuity with the original.
