Little Cottonwood Canyon

So, in that kind of situation you develop nuances and weak layers but they tend to be short-lived in the snowpack, you know, and those are epic years because not only do we have amazing coverage, but it also opens up the opportunity to ride some really exotic lines.

You know, so like when you get that stuff coming together and you're like, wow, those foothill shots where I've never seen snow or that, you know, the golf course up above Little Dell Reservoir or, you know, that road cut in Lamb's Canyon.

It's like, wow, I may never see this again in my lifetime.

So, of course, you take advantage of that.

So, the AR is unto itself, it's a meteorologic phenomenon and I'm going to go back to that epic year here because there were 33 ARs that hit the California coast and so totally pasted the California coast and remember the Tahoe zone was just like storm after storm after storm You know, remember that year here over 900 inches of snow in Little Cottonwood Canyon, and Big Cottonwood, man, hardly got outdone on that.

I mean, that is just an amazing storm that comes up out of the back door of Millie over Twin Lakes Pass and then just blasts the Millie Bowl and, you know, Great Western and the Crest Zone.

And then those storms also move their way up to Provo Canyon they totally pasted Sundance and then they came in the back door of Park City, so lit that up and the Western Uintas not to be outdone, they're in the complete firehose.

So that's kind of that our zones overview with how those storms work for us and that was the same thing for Portillo earlier in the winter.

Drive up the canyon if you're here in the summer and just tour Park City.

Or if you want to go more nature style, go up to Little Cottonwood Canyon, Snowbird and Alta.

Hike the basin behind Alta if you care to.

And then if you're really crazy, you can drive out to the Great Salt Lake and bob like a cork in the highly salty waters.

So many in Sandy.

I moved here because of its close proximity to Little Cottonwood Canyon.

I love the outdoors.

I love nature.

So we've thought about that.

How transportation occurs in our city, especially in the wintertime for our visitors who want to get up the canyon as fast as possible.

The transportation that will occur in Little Cottonwood Canyon, building out that transportation infrastructure.

First step is enhanced busing so we can get our sandy residents and our ski visitors up the canyon safely and down the canyon.

The old building was built in 1956 in Little Cottonwood Canyon and shut down during the pandemic.

Now the Alta Town Council is considering a new proposal from the owners, who want to build an eight-room micro hotel with a small restaurant, cooking facilities in the rooms, and employee housing.

Three, um, hikers had to be rescued from Mount Superior in Little Cottonwood Canyon on Friday.

According to the Salt Lake County Search and Rescue, the incident happened around 10:30 PM.

Uh, Search and Rescue crew members dispatched to the west side of Mount Superior.

And we're gonna be doing some more hiking and exploring into the Salt Lake County area.

We're first gonna go to what's called Little Cottonwood Canyon.

Little Cottonwood Canyon-

... there's amazing skiing, but in the summertime there is a lot of incredible trails.

If you wanna go a little bit more advanced, you will go up to the mountain and you will see 360 views of what's called the Wasatch Front, of these large mountains that go north and south that you'll see into that area there.

As you go up the mountain, there's what's called American Fork Twin Peaks, which is the highest point in Salt Lake County, and some other high points or mountain peaks there as well going down.

They also, I recommend, if you're going back down into Little Cottonwood Canyon from the Secret Lake Trail, there's a couple hotels that you can go.

They were splitting enormous boulders by hand, and the individual stones would eventually weigh between 2 and 6,000 pounds, and they had to find a way to get them there.

Before the railroad, it took three or four yoke of oxen to pull these stones from Little Cottonwood Canyon to Temple Square.

And the round trip took four days.

Some of these stones took not days, but weeks just to cut and prepare correctly.

Let us move now from the East River to the mountains of Utah, from a place that holds the history of disease and confinement to a place that holds something far older and far more intimate, names, the names of the dead, billions of them.

You are in Little Cottonwood Canyon in the Wasatch Range, roughly 30 kilometres southeast of Salt Lake City.

The canyon is steep and narrow, its walls composed of pale granite, a light-coloured intrusive igneous rock that is quarried here in the 19th century, for use in the construction of the Salt Lake Temple.

The granite is hard, dense and remarkably stable.

the process is slow measured in decades rather than years but it is inexorable the forest will consume the buildings the soil will absorb the rubble in a century perhaps two the only evidence that north brother island was ever developed will be the foundation stones buried beneath the roots of the trees.

The island will look exactly like what it is becoming, a patch of undisturbed woodland in the East River, home to a colony of night herons, unremarkable to anyone who does not know its history.

And in Little Cottonwood Canyon, at this moment, behind the vault doors, the microfilm is in its canisters, on its shelves, in the climate-controlled chambers, in the granite, three and a half billion images, names, dates, places, the recorded life events of a significant fraction of the human beings who have ever lived and whose existence was documented.

The microfilm is stable.
