to say the least um no i mean in all seriousness like as expected uh crystal palace came in the heavy underdog and they came in and played defensively and um i mean arsenal ended the match with 30 shots and they couldn't find a goal and it wasn't for lack of trying and you know, it's this thing of like, I think a lot of people see, okay, so a lot of shots in the statistics, why didn't they score? They must've had a bad, like they must, there must've been something wrong instead of like, this was just one of those matches where Crystal Palace literally had everything go right for them on these.
T
57:43TrebHOST
Like, I don't, out of the 30 shots, there's literally two moments where I felt like were genuinely wasteful, moments uh one of them was alessia russo coming on the break lisa bound fed her a great pass set her free i believe this was either end of the first half or start of the second half uh but it was like a great opportunity alessia russo gets behind them on a great pass and she sends it 10 feet wide and it was like you have to hit the target like you have you of all people have to be better there um And the second one I would say is shortly after coming off of the bench, Olivia Smith had a free kick in what was a really good position, like a really nice spot.
T
58:30TrebHOST
And she sent it 20 feet high.
T
58:33TrebHOST
And so it was like, those two moments were really the only moments where I was like, okay, you guys wasted opportunities.
Arsenal Women v Manchester United: Team News, Predicted XI & Match Preview

I'd like to see the same patience we saw for most of the Palace game, keep moving United around, keep trying to create that extra bit of space around the penalty area but hopefully be more clinical when the chances arrive and perhaps resist the temptation to throw the entire subs bench onto the pitch if it hasn't gone in after an hour.
R
13:17Roberto RevillaHOST
There is one player I think could be particularly useful against United and That is Lisa Baum.
R
13:25Roberto RevillaHOST
I really liked what she did against Palace because she wasn't simply playing as a winger who stood on the right or the left, depending on where she was at what stage of the game, and just waited for the ball to come to her.
R
13:38Roberto RevillaHOST
She came inside, appeared around the penalty area, combined with Alessia Russo, and kept making Palace have to decide who was supposed to be dealing with her.
R
18:13Roberto RevillaHOST
Misa Rodriguez obviously continues in goal while Daphne is out and I'd expect her to go with Emily Fox at right back, Leah Williamson and Lotta together in the middle and Onabadio on the left.
R
18:25Roberto RevillaHOST
In midfield I think Georgia Stanway and Kyra Cooney-Cross continue together with Mariana ahead of them because we've only seen that combination for a short amount of time and Actually, I would as well quite like it to become a partnership before we start to take it apart again.
R
18:50Roberto RevillaHOST
Russo starts in the middle for me and Lisa Baum absolutely keeps her place on the right hand side.
R
18:58Roberto RevillaHOST
The one change I think Renee might make is Olivia Smith coming in on the left, which is the change that I would make as well.

So you can see how it's not even the games against, you know, the other teams in the big three that can be the ones that decide where the lead goes and obviously with Manchester City winning two from two that puts Arsenal and Chelsea to be fair at a disadvantage already what I feel about going into this weekend is looking back at last season's games against Manchester United and I know they're a very different side this year those are both 0-0 games as well so it's slightly foreboding and I hope it doesn't go the same way and I was watching the game from home on the weekend and What struck me was it felt so similar to watching the Arsenal men's team, not of last year, but a couple of seasons ago where teams sat back and they just had no real intensity or idea of how to get a goal and break them down.
A
35:23Art de RocheGUEST
The one kind of spark was Lisa Baum on that right-hand side.
A
35:27Art de RocheGUEST
And what has been interesting about her is is she's a left footer on the right-hand side.
A
35:34Art de RocheGUEST
And I know watchers of the men's game have seen that for years now.

I know that there's the bit of mixed reviews off that.
J
6:14Jamie SpangherHOST
I think if you're gonna make her that player, or you're gonna make Lisa Baum that player, she needs to get four or five starts in a row.
J
6:20Jamie SpangherHOST
Like, y- we can't be expecting this team to be able to work with new fullbacks and playing young players in that position and, and changing it a lot because Chloe Kelly and Olivia Smith are, are very different footballers, and the way they play football is very different.
J
6:32Jamie SpangherHOST
And last week, our biggest issue in that, like, narrow victory was the gelling issue.

Mariana finds Onabuehi again like as almost like a left central midfielder.
T

She goes really quickly to Lisa Baum.

Think the only time Lisa Baum turned up on the left basically in this game.

R

... which I thought is, like, quite impressive.
C
42:26Chloe MorganHOST
I think what, the, the chance that summed up the game for me was, uh, Lisa Baum.
C
42:32Chloe MorganHOST
She was, uh, I think running down the l- is it the left-hand side? I think it was.
C
42:37Chloe MorganHOST
She had this beautifully curved whipped ball in.

It's just, yeah, I, I don't know.
R
50:52Rachel O'SullivanHOST
I feel like for some of these teams, and I, I thought that Lisa Baum in the first game had kind of, didn't have that pressure and wasn't playing like, "Oh God, we need goals." But it did feel like the team were like, "Oh God, not this again."
C
51:03Chloe MorganHOST
I thought she was one of their most impressive players.

Lisa Baum and Mariana Caldente hitting the woodwork.
F
3:29Freddie CardyHOST
Alessia Russo, for me, should score a couple of goals.
F
3:32Freddie CardyHOST
Is that an element of concern? You know, that...
A
6:20Amelia WarrenGUEST
And I think it kind of just became a little bit predictable.
A
6:23Amelia WarrenGUEST
And then that was where they were able to kind of break us down and stop us from scoring so yeah I agree with you I think in the first half it looked really good and really positive and in the second half perhaps got a little bit sloppy but again that's something for them to work on going forwards
F
6:36Freddie CardyHOST
Is there a part of that as well for me Mariana Caldenti played well Lisa Baum played well they both came off with 15 minutes to go and if you're Palace you're thinking okay that's good and no disrespect to Caitlin Ford but I think Lisa Baum offers more than Caitlin Ford at this moment in time There's no injury concern I'm aware of.
F
6:56Freddie CardyHOST
Why take her off apart from what feels like just for the sake of it? You know, you have...

Yeah, I just think it is the sign of insanity when you keep doing the same thing, expecting the result to be different.
H

I just couldn't get my head around the substitutions as well.
H

Oh my God, don't.

Arsenal Women 0-0 Crystal Palace: How Did Arsenal Not Win?
R
4:51Roberto RevillaHOST
Georgia Stanway and Kyra began in midfield.
R
4:54Roberto RevillaHOST
Mariana Caldentey played ahead of them and Lisa Baum and Chloe Kelly supported Alessia Russo in attack.
R
5:03Roberto RevillaHOST
Lotta gave Arsenal another natural center back alongside Leah and added height against Palace's set pieces, what few of them they were.
R
5:13Roberto RevillaHOST
With Kyra Cooney-Cross sharing the responsibility of collecting the ball from defense, Georgia Stanway had more freedom to carry it forward and run towards the penalty area.
R
5:24Roberto RevillaHOST
Lisa Baum moved to the right after starting on the left at Brighton while Chloe Kelly took up her usual position on the left side.
R
5:33Roberto RevillaHOST
Chloe could hold the width and deliver crosses while Lisa was more likely to move inside and combine with the midfielders.
R
5:42Roberto RevillaHOST
Mariana drifted between them coming deep to help Kyra and Georgia before appearing around Alessia Russo whenever Arsenal got into an attacking situation.
R
10:25Roberto RevillaHOST
So a pass might reach its target, but the person receiving the ball barely had time to turn before another defender was straight onto them.
