Next June... is there going to be a new set of guidelines, a new set of learnings? Because hopefully Apple is learning from this as they're seeing it go out into the world with developers, with designers, having a sense of like, okay, what actually worked? Because they only had their own set of apps to be using against.
David SmithHOST
13:15
And I think we had a lot of this in Liquid Glass that from the first version of Liquid Glass to the one we got last year, there were some improvements, some changes, some things that were based on the contact with the world.
David SmithHOST
13:27
And hopefully we're going to get those.
David SmithHOST
13:28
But I also don't want to commit too far down any path until we get to that point where I feel like we may end up needing to work back or change how we've structured things based on you know what's coming down the road
Rafa CondeGUEST
15:37
I think
David SmithHOST
15:38
the tab bar is definitely that.
David SmithHOST
15:39
The whole thing in Liquid Glass where the tab bar became a floating element that was separate from your content rather than being this hard rectangle at the bottom was clearly done so that on the Duo they can flip it sideways and put it on the side.
David SmithHOST
15:55
It's this thing that they're changing for that reason.
Darren DaviesGUEST
16:47
The drop-down thing with the buttons on it that you can choose and edit and add controls to and so on.
Darren DaviesGUEST
16:55
Looking at it on my Mac now, not only is Liquid Glass helping as an overlay to overlay those on top of what's behind it, but they're all circular.
MikeHOST
17:05
Mm-hmm.
Darren DaviesGUEST
17:06
So they're all finger-shaped, funnily enough.
Darren DaviesGUEST
17:09
So I wonder if this was planned years ago.
Darren DaviesGUEST
17:15
And as part of liquid glass, for instance, perhaps.
Eric EricksonGUEST
17:19
One of the things I think kind of left out that I think we all think is, I don't like touching my screen as it is.
Eric EricksonGUEST
17:27
I mean, I don't want to.
Benjamin MayoHOST
49:12
yeah they have to fit in that little column although if you if they use a system tab bar you can like long press on them and they actually reveal labels like there's some accommodations there that are like secondary actions if you really want to but if you get used to it and i've been using it in the simulator for like a month now i do feel like it feels pretty intuitive eventually and i presume there's an ergonomics thing where like when you're using unfolded you can kind of like grip it with your hand and just kind of like thumb back and forward on the right hand side and then you can do split screen and you get the bar on the left hand side you kind of get like dual thumb actions like a joypad kind of controls on the left and right um i don't know how well that plays out in practice because obviously there's also still buttons that appear all over the shop but i do think there's a a cleverness or like a utility that also just being like your main elements of the screen are always here you know
Chance MillerHOST
50:00
yeah i think the app that i always like to use for we talked about this a ton during the ios 26 liquid glass saga whatever you want to call it is the music app because there's so much going on in the music app there's tabs menus on the screen switching between what you're listening to the album art view versus the navigation views all of that stuff So the music app, the tab bars have been compressed into the bottom right corner, vertically aligned, overlaps with all of the content.
Chance MillerHOST
50:26
And like you said, you can tap on each of the individual tabs.
Chance MillerHOST
50:29
Or if you do what has kind of become the way I navigate a lot of these tab bars since Liquid Glass debuted, you tap it, then you scroll over it without lifting up your finger.
Chance MillerHOST
50:38
That's when the buttons expand and I can see, okay, this is home, new, radio, library, or search.
Chance MillerHOST
50:43
The music app, I think, is the best example of what an ideal kind of experience should be on the Duo in a first-party app from Apple.
PatricePANELIST
30:44
... say merged or that they're the same, whatever, but there's been some convergence in design and how things are done.
PatricePANELIST
30:50
Um, especially now also with Liquid Glass.
PatricePANELIST
30:53
I can see that it might even work quite well with some exceptions.
PatricePANELIST
30:57
Like, there will be some apps that work completely horribly because they're old or they're...
MikeHOST
9:19
There were a few things that Dave let go by there that were not necessarily dependent upon Apple Intelligence.
MikeHOST
9:27
Most of it was, but the new liquid glass slider, I think, did you mention that?
Dave GinsburgGUEST
9:31
I have not gotten to that yet, yeah.
Dave GinsburgGUEST
9:33
Oh, you haven't gotten to it yet.

14 MINS LATER

MikeHOST
23:51
You mentioned that there are still a couple of things you wanted to bring up.
MikeHOST
23:54
Certainly, there are other Apple intelligence-related features like Image Playground and Genmoji and things like that.
MikeHOST
24:01
But you said you wanted to talk about the liquid glass slider.
Dave GinsburgGUEST
24:05
Yeah.
NiléaneHOST
17:24
I'm going to keep it on.
NiléaneHOST
17:25
And, um, also, Liquid Glass on the Mac looks great with HDR because you can tell some of the UI highlights are using HDR.
NiléaneHOST
17:34
And I only noticed this on the built-in display of my MacBook Pro and never on the big screen, and now I see it on the big screen, so looks kinda good.
NiléaneHOST
17:42
Uh, but in general, I also hate HDR [laughs] because...
Matt BirchlerHOST
18:15
HDR.I have as well.
NiléaneHOST
18:18
Pretty cool.
Matt BirchlerHOST
18:19
And a- and it was because Steve Trafton S- Smith posted something about, like, how HDR liquid glass looks really good, and, like, this is how it was meant to be, and, uh-
NiléaneHOST
18:27
[laughs]

If they ship that menu of like the 27 different suggested actions and they don't let you have a toggle for turning off our Siri in the menu, like, you know, it's ridiculous.
Chance MillerHOST

The Apple Books app has adopted kind of a more familiar liquid glass design in Beta 3.
Chance MillerHOST

And Mayo, you pointed out that this is them moving away from what was like a weird custom menu design in the Books app to something just more system.
Chance MillerHOST
49:24
Looks more like the rest of iOS 27.
