DanHOST
33:33
It does have the Mint repos.
DanHOST
33:35
So it's kind of like Linux Mint meets AI, if you will.
DanHOST
33:41
So it's not a bad platform to build on.
DanHOST
33:45
And it's fairly comfortable.
MashTheNewtonHOST
83:44
I don't know, or I guess not wanting to take time late at night to be click clacking away like quickly, loudly on my mechanical keyboard.
MashTheNewtonHOST
83:52
Um, I ended up using an old laptop that I got from an old job that I have Linux mint on.
MashTheNewtonHOST
84:00
Um, and I installed, uh, typing in the dead overkill there.
MashTheNewtonHOST
84:05
Um, So I played not every, I think the first two levels I played at my gaming PC with my mechanical keyboard and then the rest were on a little Lenovo think pad for the rest of it.
Douglas TumanHOST
0:55
Oh, yeah? What'd you hook up?
ShortwavePANELIST
0:57
I switched from Linux Mint Debian to a system called NixOS.
ShortwavePANELIST
1:03
Okay.
ShortwavePANELIST
1:04
And so I've been configuring that.

3 HRS 35 MINS LATER

ShortwavePANELIST
215:56
See, the one that I'm using for myself is NixOS now because I want to actually get it working the way I want it to.
ShortwavePANELIST
216:03
And I've been using Linux for 16 years and I'm still having trouble with some trouble with Nix.
ShortwavePANELIST
216:07
But the one I would recommend for a new user would have to be Linux Mint, either Linux Mint Debian or just Linux Mint based on Ubuntu.
ShortwavePANELIST
216:14
But I'd say Linux Mint.
Edward OjamboHOST
5:50
Ubuntu was fine.
Edward OjamboHOST
5:52
Add a few issues with Linux Mint and Ubuntu, but Fedora, no problem.
Edward OjamboHOST
6:01
You feel a sense of absolute ownership over the machine.
Edward OjamboHOST
6:05
There are no hidden processes stealing your precious CPU circles.
NickHOST
11:20
Some of these we should know more about in the coming weeks.
NickHOST
11:23
These are all part of the XApps project from Linux Mint.
NickHOST
11:26
This is a collection of apps meant for Linux Mint, but it is also designed to be used by other desktops if they want it, for example, XFCE or Mate, things that depend on GTK, but don't want to move to GNOME apps or LibreDueta, they could potentially use them, even though I don't think that has really happened yet for the existing Mint apps.
NickHOST
11:45
I do think it is a good thing to see Linux Mint developing their own applications for their own desktop.
NickHOST
11:51
They used to use GNOME apps.
NickHOST
11:52
They really don't like LibreDueta.
Chris TitusHOST
3:43
It does like three big ones of those just so you get a good bearing and then you can customize a little bit from there.
Chris TitusHOST
3:50
But if you don't want to do that and you just want out of the box... look that's where these other distributions come in in my mind so I'm gonna just go through some of them Kubuntu it's like a KDE version so you can look at KDE Ubuntu there's Lubuntu which is like a lightweight Ubuntu it doesn't come with a lot of the nice aesthetics but it can work on a really old machine just fine there's kde neon which is like a newer version of kde that looks pretty snazzy there's peppermint and elementary which are just offshoots i don't recommend them but they're very very popular so that's there when i come into this i always recommend people go to this one which is linux mint It has a really good Windows vibe to it.
Chris TitusHOST
4:41
So if you're coming from Windows to the Linux world, Linux Mint's usually, I say, that's where you should start.
Chris TitusHOST
4:49
If you don't like Linux Mint, try Ubuntu.
Chris TitusHOST
4:51
If you want a different look and feel, it's just a little bit harder getting around when you're first coming to it.
Chris TitusHOST
4:57
But this is a great starting point.
Chris TitusHOST
5:30
And most of those are universal for all these distributions.
Chris TitusHOST
5:34
However, the two main distributions you should be focused on is Debian and Ubuntu.
Luke LafreniereSOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
8:31
That being said, my use case on my laptop is fairly limited.
Chris TitusHOST
8:35
So Luke, the first time around, was doing Linux Mint.
Chris TitusHOST
8:38
I really like Luke.
Chris TitusHOST
8:40
I think he's kind of really taken to the whole spirit of Linux.
Luke LafreniereSOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
9:05
But the reason for that was because my experience was limited mostly to a browser.
Luke LafreniereSOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
9:10
So I kind of want to continue the Arch experiments, but in a way that the community is mostly flagging right now as better for gaming, which is going the cache-y direction.
Luke LafreniereSOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
9:20
I still love Linux Mint, still use it in a couple spots here or there.
Luke LafreniereSOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
9:23
I agree with that.
Chris TitusHOST
10:05
But better options.
Chris TitusHOST
10:07
Linux Mint.
Chris TitusHOST
10:08
Fantastic.
Chris TitusHOST
10:09
If you're a new user, Linux Mint's great.
Chris TitusHOST
10:11
Fedora, also very solid.
Chris TitusHOST
10:13
That's what's been solid for many years.
Chris TitusHOST
10:56
Bazite if you're a gamer and you just kind of want things to work right out of the box and you don't really want to tinker with anything.
Chris TitusHOST
11:03
That's a decent distro.
Doug SwinhartGUEST
33:18
I'm going to say this right out.
Doug SwinhartGUEST
33:20
I would suggest that this individual spend two to three hours doing research, go to LinuxMintOS.com, download Linux Mint, and install it side by side with 11.
Doug SwinhartGUEST
33:32
You'll have a dual boot system.
Doug SwinhartGUEST
33:33
You can go back and forth, but Linux Mint, you'll love it.
Doug SwinhartGUEST
33:38
You play with that for a couple hours, and I would also suggest that you use the desktop XFCE.
Doug SwinhartGUEST
33:46
I'm not real high on Cinnamon, and the other one is Mate, and the next one is actually built on Debian, so it's a pure, a little bit more raw Linux, but XFCE, it will remind you of Windows XP, and people say, oh, that's for older computers.
Doug SwinhartGUEST
35:04
It's not that difficult.
Doug SwinhartGUEST
35:06
Once you get it all lined up and you know, got a good plan to flow on and you've got your USB, bootable USB created so you can boot up and go.
Chris TitusHOST
16:36
If you're brand new, you've watched my entire series and you're like, you know what? I'm a lifetime Windows user and I'm jumping into Linux.
Chris TitusHOST
16:43
get linux mint um i've i you know i think i bashed in a prior video um but it's basically almost a direct fork of ubuntu but it's more tailored to a windows user and it's a far easier break-in than anything else it'd be my hands-down recommendation if you're going to do this and you don't know anything about linux linux mint's going to be your best bet it's it's good.
Chris TitusHOST
17:11
It's a good transition period and get your feet wet, so to speak.
Chris TitusHOST
17:16
And as for me, what will I do going forward? Am I sticking with Ubuntu? If I'm going back to Fedora, all these other things? Well, I'm using Fedora at my work and that's mainly just because I have so much crap and I'm doing a lot of things on a day-to-day basis.
