Lanky, personable, and usually armed with a vulgar joke, Marshall had been known as a class clown growing up in Baltimore.

Langston Hughes, a classmate during his undergrad years at Lincoln University, described him as, quote, rough and ready, loud and wrong, good-natured and uncouth, end quote.

He straightened up when he decided to become a lawyer and set his sights on enrolling at the University of Maryland's law school.

But he was unable to attend because of the color of his skin, an injustice that would motivate much of his career.

Ghana was the first independent African nation outside of colonialism.

And what a lot of people don't know, a lot of African-Americans don't know, is Kwame Nkrumah went to school at Lincoln University in Pennsylvania, which was also one of the first HBCUs.

And he's also a Sigma.

He pledged when he was in school.

Marshall was a victim of, but also a victor over, segregated education himself.

After graduating with honors from Lincoln University, he was unable to attend the University of Maryland Law School because he wasn't white.

Undeterred, he attended Howard University School of Law instead, which had become the first Black law school in the nation in 1869.

He graduated first in his class.

There had been others that had folded before the 1908 research started.

That included Lincoln University in Oxford, Pennsylvania, which had opened in 1870 and closed four years later.

Straight University Medical Department was established in New Orleans in 1873, but was disbanded in 1874.

Hannibal Medical College of Memphis, Tennessee had opened in 1889, but closed in 1896.

Talking about a lot today, man.

I was going to try to fit so much into the second segment of the show just as far as what's going on nationally, but I moved some of it to the third segment because there's so much to talk about.

Upon his death in 1967, his decision to leave his library to Lincoln University ensured that his life's work would continue to nourish the roots from which it grew.

He was an architect of modern American culture who successfully scaled every racial mountain put in his path, creating a legacy of resilience, beauty, and uncompromising freedom that continues to define what it means to write from the soul of a people.

So what does this mean for us right here, right now? Langston Hughes didn't just write poetry.

Went to Temple University.

Got my undergrad master's degree at Lincoln University, and I was still broke.

And then I think I got...

No, I think I was in social work.

And then he taught at several HBCUs.

He taught at Lincoln University.

He's actually an alum of Lincoln University in Pennsylvania.

Taught at Clark Atlanta University, taught at Southern University down in Louisiana, either Southern or Grambling.

I get those confused.

The gentlewoman corrected me again.

But yesterday, Dr. Seco and Rufus Turnbull and myself were on, and we were talking about how we get this culture preserved.
