At its June meeting, the Roundup for Safety Board of Directors awarded $10,000 to two local search and rescue organizations.

Flathead County Search and Rescue received $6,000 for swift water rescue kits, while David Thompson Search and Rescue in Lincoln County received $4,000 for swift water rescue kits, life jackets, and helmets.

Roundup for Safety is a community life safety program sponsored by the co-op and voluntarily funded by members who round up their monthly electric bill to the nearest dollar.

Those contributions provide grant funding for local non-profit safety projects.

The next set of encounters comes out of the western third of the state, where the country turns to steep timbered mountains for 150 miles.

The reports cluster in Missoula County, Flathead County, and Lincoln County, with Gallatin County close behind.

They come from the Bitterroots, the Bob Marshall, the Lolo, and the Cabinets.

The corner that gets talked about most is the far northwest in the Yaak River country, which is some of the closest thing to genuine roadless timber left in the lower 48.
