According to a report by the Associated Press, President and CEO Jody Meals told the staff, The announcement comes after the News Guild voted down a proposed contract by 46-25.

Lillian King, the News Guild's bargaining chair, said in a statement, quote, It's disappointing that block communications would rather shutter the paper than work toward an equitable contract, unquote.

She also warned, quote, All content at The Blade could be created or edited with AI with no protections for journalists or requirements to disclose AI usage to its readers, end of quote.

Closure would leave the Toledo metro area of some 600,000 residents without a daily newspaper.
