Liebeck v. McDonald's Restaurants

My goodness.

Sometimes I think all of this boils down to what happened in 1994 with what was a Stella Liebeck, the McDonald's coffee lawsuit.

And we've become such a litigious nation since then.

It's so predatory.

Yeah, we did a, a story about the, uh, McDonald's coffee lawsuit and how people used to say it was all a scam, and it's proof that we need litigation and tort reform, blah, blah, blah.

But they didn't understand the true story of Stella Liebeck and the terrible burns that she received, and the long track record that McDonald's had had at, at selling essentially boiling-temperature coffee.

And so the, uh, settlement or, or the judgment in the case was actually a way to get McDonald's, a multi-billion dollar company, to change its behavior and make things right.

And Stella Liebeck actually didn't end up with all the money that she was originally granted.

It was appealed down, blah, blah, blah, but it's, it's an interesting look at how we, in our knee-jerky culture, will often get things wrong.

This relates to the new speech I'm gonna release in a couple of weeks on the same lines.

The New Mexico jury found that Meta had violated the state's Unfair Practices Act 75,000 times.

The Unfair Practices Act in Mexico, New Mexico, effectively being their consumer's rights laws, which makes it illegal for companies to mislead or deceive customers.

Only, uh, British people watching this will get this, but I guess this is kind of a Martin Lewis final boss kind of stuff.

He does also hate Ma- Meta, I think, because they alway- they let- They keep having a thing where, uh, Martin Lewis, so if you're watching in any other country, sorry, uh, is the money saving expert.

That on the top of the $206 billion the industry had already agreed to pay the states.

That 289 billion figure, however, was eventually watered down to just 14 billion.

The tobacco companies have absolutely survived and continue to find new customers, partly through seeking to sell cigarettes to people in developing countries, but also through getting into the vaping game, too.

The Marlboro Man sort of did love vaping.
