Lewes

Infantry battalions in the Territorial Force, like the Fifth Royal Sussex, the Cinque Ports, had eight companies, and these were scattered across this geographical area amongst the towns and villages in this region.

So in places like Hastings, Battle, Lewes, and Rye, and several other villages, one of them Wadhurst, where C Company of the Fifth Battalion was based.

All of them in those places had drill halls, physical buildings that was the, essentially the depot of the company, one of those eight companies in that area.

So it gave it a local feel.

So that attack from the British point of view, which stretched from near the village of Fromelles over on the left flank, right across in front of the Aubers Ridge, near villages like Mauquoisart and Fauquoisart, Neuve Chapelle itself, and over to the right flank, near to the village of Richebourg Close to a long section of local rural road known as the Rue du Bois, and coming off of that was a track known as the Cinder Track, and that was where the right flank attack went in and where the 5th Battalion Royal Sussex Regiment, alongside one of their regular battalions from the regiment, the 2nd Royal Sussex, and also other lads from the Munster Fusiliers and the Northamptonshire Regiment, these units would go into action around that area of the Cinder Track.

And for the Wadhurst company, its lads on the kind of right flank of the battalion, so right out there on the kind of extreme area of where the attack would go in, its lads were on this exposed flank of the advance.

And as they went into action, the Wadhurst company and the Lewes lads alongside them came under terrific fire from the German trenches.

The bombardment had not succeeded in destroying the German defenses or, more importantly, the defenders, so machine gun fire was laid down.
