Leslie Iwerks is the director behind this documentary, which is exactly what it sounds like.
Anderson CowanHOST
16:24
It is the story of Disneyland being built by hand in large machines from scratch.
Anderson CowanHOST
16:31
And it opens up with a year, like a footage, stock footage of a year after Disneyland had been open.

him.
Bob RogersGUEST

Fortunately, we've got his daughter, Leslie Iwerks, who you ought to have on this show.
Matthew KrulHOST

I did.
Matthew KrulHOST

... please send in your ideas to reedygeeks@gmail.com. On today's episode, the geeks discuss our feedback on Leslie Iwerks' new documentary, World Builders.
Andrew ShopeHOST

[upbeat music] So in one of our recent episodes, we talked about Bob Weiss and the history of Walt Disney Imagineering.
Andrew ShopeHOST
1:40
We touched on something that we thought has become increasingly interesting about Disney.
Andrew ShopeHOST
2:01
Disney doesn't just want us to know the attractions they created.
Andrew ShopeHOST
2:05
We're increasingly being invited to know who created them and how they think and what inspired them, and that brings us to today's episode.
Andrew ShopeHOST
2:13
Leslie Iwerks' new documentary, World Builders, takes that idea and expands it beyond Imagineering, looking at the creative people behind the worlds Disney creates across movies, animation, and the parks.
Andrew ShopeHOST
2:26
The three of us watched World Builders and today we're gonna share our biggest takeaways, what stood out to us, what we learned, and what the documentary says about the people behind Disney experiences that we know and love.
KevinGUEST

You can go watch.
KevinGUEST

It's a Leslie Iwerks documentary by the same name, World Builders.
KevinGUEST
19:20
And it started, um, she explained, by the idea of a photo she saw of Walt Disney on the, um, Mine Train Through Nature's Wonderland, I believe, where she saw the photo and she was like, "I wish I could go back in time and ask him, like, how he felt being on, like, that ride with other people experiencing it with him, and having where people are experiencing this thing that was from just your idea, and now it's a world," you know? And then she was like, "But I can't go back in time and ask Walt any questions," obviously.
KevinGUEST
19:48
"But we have so many people these days who have worked on Disney projects that I can ask that question to." So on the panel she had Kevin Feige, Pete Docter, Jon Favreau, Dave Filoni, Jared Bush.
AmandaHOST
20:46
If Walt had listened to everyone, we wouldn't have what we have.
AmandaHOST
20:49
Okay? And he was out of time and under budget if you have seen Leslie Iwerks films.
AmandaHOST
20:55
He was over budget.
AmandaHOST
20:57
But you have to bet on yourself.
Jim HollifieldGUEST

And so someone like that is able to fill in additional aspects to their Disney story.
Jim HollifieldGUEST
47:50
But we have authors and researchers who have really gone on some great sleuthing activities because Disney, photos of animators that we don't know and then you talk to someone whose father or mother worked at the disney studio and they go yes i know who that was they were our next door neighbor and so suddenly we put a name with the face and so there's a lot of that kind of behind the scenes work where you go oh does anybody know who this is and so that happens sometimes their email threads and and discoveries and so forth i think that was one of the exciting parts about the Leslie Iwerks documentary, Disneyland Handcrafted, because there were instances where you hear the audio, the voice of some of those famous names that I had recognized, but I had not heard what they sounded like.
Jim HollifieldGUEST
48:37
Yes,
Theresa UrbanHOST
48:38
yes, yeah.
Sean MurphyHOST

And last but not least, next week we are going to be talking about the new documentary that came out from Leslie Iwerks called Worldbuilders.
Andrew ShopeHOST
56:30
We're going to give our takeaways from watching that show.
Andrew ShopeHOST
56:34
It's about an hour long.
Andrew ShopeHOST
56:35
And if you would like to watch it before that episode, this is the week to watch it so that you can know what we're talking about and we can have a great discussion on Instagram as well.
JJ HebnerHOST
56:47
Yeah, the same person that did the Disneyland documentary that came out last year, Leslie Iwerks, who is the daughter of one of the original Imagineers, is the person that directed this and put it together.
Andrew ShopeHOST
57:03
Yes, yeah.
Andrew ShopeHOST
57:04
So give that a watch, and we'll share our takeaways next week.
