So as a whole, as an essay, I think it makes a really important intervention into heritage debates which still resonate today.

Hello, my name's Les Back.

I teach sociology at the University of Glasgow, but I suppose my formation was in the early 1980s.

A- and I've written a lot about both racism in the media and in popular culture, but also, uh, I've written a lot about the, the role of the media, I suppose, and how to understand it.

So, you know, Stuart Hall, you know, he wrote a book about youth culture with a bunch of other postgraduate students called Resistance Through Rituals, which I remember reading, and he was telling the whole story of British society through style, through music.

He was not born in the UK.

He wasn't of England or London, but he was the best student of Englishness and, and British culture I th- I think of his generation.

Does that chime with anything in your own

work? It really does, Laurie, because I think being alert to those connected forms of sociology helps us to develop a better sociology.

You know, one of the things which I've been doing in my time as president is to get out into the world and do lots of talks in schools.

I was just in Nelson and Colne this week on my way coming down to London.

But also in her book, she has a fantastic chapter on the Haitian Revolution.

And a fact that's often missed, even by people who are local in Nelson, in the hundred or so students who are studying sociology at Nelson and Collins Sixth Form, was that C.L.R. James, who wrote the historic study of the Haitian Revolution, the Black Jacobins, moved to Nelson in the 1930s to live with a fellow Trinidadian, James was from Trinidad, called Leary Constantine, who was the first black professional cricketer to earn a living in this tiny little town, you know.

And one of the things, this is why these versions of history are better ones, that is often lost.

That was such an interesting group.
