She could score points on the basketball court.

And she was the kind of player who drew attention from coaches and classmates.

Family members and people who knew her in Leon, Iowa later described her as bubbly, outgoing, popular, the girl who would buy breakfast for her young siblings on the way to school and seemed to have like a clear, great path ahead of her in life.

She even received interest from colleges and was offered a partial scholarship to play basketball.
