Leon Lott

On this episode of The Lead, it is October, which means it is Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

And this podcast will focus exclusively on that with my interview with Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott and Monique Garvin, who is the Director of the Violence Against Women Act Programs at the South Carolina Attorney General's Office.

Again, very informative episode.

We're talking about the trends and some of the sad situations that face South Carolinians when it comes to domestic violence and what you should be looking for as a parent or as someone who's in a relationship when it comes to the warning signs of domestic violence.

Give us some hot takes, 803-563-7169.

The Violence Policy Center found that in 2024, South Carolina's rate of females killed by males was 2.2 per 100,000, which is above the national rate of 1.4. That year, a total of 62 female victims were killed by males.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and this year we speak with Monique Garvin with the South Carolina Attorney General's Office, as well as Richmond County Sheriff Leon Lott.

I opened my discussion with Lott by asking him about why responding to domestic violence calls is so dangerous.

They also added the investigation action will not change until she is found.

Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott is close to the family and keeps them apprised of any new tips that come in.

He says, "I can see the pain in their eyes and hear it in their voices, but they are still focused and that has fueled us." The police department has tracked every lead, even traveling as far as Las Vegas and Minnesota to speak with people that claim to know something about the Dinwiddie disappearance.

These tips were either criminals trying to cut a deal for themselves or people just lying for unknown reasons.

Serial killers tend to work in the opposite direction, trying to claim crimes they weren't involved in out of some sick sense of quote-unquote pride.

In September 2020, on the 28th anniversary, Sheriff Leon Lott told reporters there was a very active investigation going on and declined to say anything more.

He never did, and the Columbia Police Department still lists Dale as its oldest open missing person case.

At around 2 in the morning on January 5, 2002, a telephone rang inside a house on Daybreak Drive in Bartlett, Tennessee.

They also added, the investigation action will not change until she is found.
