Hi, my name is Dan Myhock and I want to welcome you to Dairy Downloaded.
Dan MyhockHOST
0:05
In this episode, we're going to hear about the process behind Lely certified pre-owned robots from reconditioning and testing to financing and support.
Dan MyhockHOST
0:18
But first, what does that investment actually look like on the farm? Sarah Sacker and Joshua Schenck milk around 100 cows in Monroe, Wisconsin.
Dan MyhockHOST
0:29
On their farm, certified, pre-owned robots offered a practical, cost-effective solution to labor challenges.
Joshua SchenckSOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
2:05
And when you're spending a lot of money on something that is going to milk your cows 24 hours a day, you want to make sure that you're getting something that's already been gone through professionally and has a warranty with it.
Sarah SackerSOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
2:18
We have a lot of confidence in the reconditioned A4s.
Sarah SackerSOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
2:22
We kind of feel like you're getting a hybrid new used robot because a lot of the important things gotten replaced, they've gotten looked over and we still can have them serviced like new A5s with our Lely Center.
Sarah SackerSOUNDBITE_SPEAKER
2:36
Overall, we are getting more milk per cow.
Ad van VeldeGUEST
3:20
So, um, right, and in 2000, uh, we-- No, in 2000, we did it, and in 2016, we built a new barn, also with two robots, and we bought some extra land.
Ad van VeldeGUEST
3:38
And, uh, so, and right now we're milking 250 cows with, uh, four milking robots, Lely, and this is the second generation we are, uh, we now, we have now.
Ad van VeldeGUEST
3:52
Um, the, it's very good soil.
Ad van VeldeGUEST
3:58
It's the northern part of the Netherlands.

6 MINS LATER

Ad van VeldeGUEST
9:43
So that's quite an, uh, profitable, uh, development.
Ad van VeldeGUEST
9:50
But he, he do that by himself with the program.
Ad van VeldeGUEST
9:52
He, and he cooperates a little with Lely and, uh, AI, and yeah.
Ad van VeldeGUEST
9:59
I'm not ex- expert, but it's a bit what's ...
Megan HempflingGUEST
7:23
We do have four robots on our farm.
Megan HempflingGUEST
7:26
They are the Lely robots.
Megan HempflingGUEST
7:28
We milk 250 cows, and on average, a cow on our farm produces right now 105 pounds, which is astonishing.
Megan HempflingGUEST
7:38
So we've had Lely robots for 12 years now, and we also have other modern technologies such as a feed pusher, and then also temperature-controlled fans as well.
Joel PenorwoodCORRESPONDENT
7:53
Well, I appreciate your introduction, and we'll talk a little bit more of course about what you do on the daily and all, because, well, we're gonna be talking a lot about that, as it's a Portrait of a Modern Dairy is a new storytelling initiative that's been launched by the Dairy Checkoff to, to help, well, as you can tell, us probably tell the good word, uh, of dairy farming.
Joel PenorwoodCORRESPONDENT
8:13
So what all has it entailed so far? What is its message? What are you trying to tell folks? And who's the audience? Who are you trying to tell these messages to?
Joel PenorwoodCORRESPONDENT
9:02
Is there anything that, that maybe has stood out to you i- in this process of, of your own growth?
Megan HempflingGUEST
9:07
I guess just seeing, like, the other ladies and how modern technology is different on their farms.
Dan VenteicherGUEST
2:14
In 2020, I think we didn't really have much technology before that short of, say, auto steer on a tractor.
Dan VenteicherGUEST
2:22
And we put in three Lely A5 milking robots.
Dan VenteicherGUEST
2:25
We put in a Lely Vector at the exact same time, which is the automatic feeding system.
Dan VenteicherGUEST
2:29
So the A5s milk the cows.
Dan VenteicherGUEST
2:31
The Vector feeds the cows.
Charlotte AshleyHOST
4:16
However...
Charlotte AshleyHOST
4:18
Lely have just come out with a new technology.
Charlotte AshleyHOST
4:20
I don't think it's out yet.
Charlotte AshleyHOST
4:22
Correct me if I'm wrong.
Charlotte AshleyHOST
4:38
It's basically like our Fitbit cow collars, but on steroids.
Charlotte AshleyHOST
4:41
I wonder if they're
Rebecca WilsonHOST
4:42
using Lely.
Charlotte AshleyHOST
4:43
Could be
Stacy RethmanGUEST
2:21
Um, I believe it was in the '70s they officially built our herringbone parlor that we used for, um, 40 years until we put in four robotic milkers in 2019, and then we added four more, um, throughout 2022, and started them up in January of 2023.
Stacy RethmanGUEST
2:45
So now we are fully robotic with eight, uh, Lely A5s, and we are milking anywhere from 480 to 500 cows.
Stacy RethmanGUEST
2:55
And it's constantly a work in progress, like any farmer knows.
Stacy RethmanGUEST
3:00
Um, but it's a just really great place to be.
