And it was very different to Tor's usual books.
BronteHOST

It isn't romantic, it's dark academia, fantasy, but it has enough of those qualities that she does like in things like Legendborn that I thought would interest her.
BronteHOST
15:17
I wasn't 100% sure if she would like it, but equally it was a standalone in like 450 pages.
BronteHOST
15:24
So it's like not too big of a commitment if you don't like it.

But my hair usually, I try and have the color correspond a little bit to the book that I'm promoting.
Tracy DeonnGUEST
7:28
And I think my first round of color was very Legendborn red and, and blue.
Tracy DeonnGUEST
7:36
Um, and then we did purple, and like there was a lot of purple for Oathbound, like deeper purples and like violets.

Once you get into them and you get to know them, you might find some characters annoying at first, but once you get into them and you get to know the characters, they are so... fucking hilarious yeah and one of the big kind of criticisms this series gets is the writing style but the audio is actually really great too yeah so you could do the audios if you are nervous about that writing style because they are even funnier on audio than they are reading them oh so good so good please if you haven't read them think about picking them up for sure and then go and watch our interview with the authors yeah best moment of 2026 yeah it really was the best thing we've done this year yeah it was too good it's such a funny episode as well um and then do you want a second book we'd love that series as well the next series that we love that's academy based is legend born I stan Legendborn so hard.
speaker_0HOST
34:16
Again, one of my most favorite characters ever is from this series, which is Selwing Kane.

There is fantasy too, but it's dystopian first, I would say.
speaker_0HOST

And...
speaker_0HOST
38:03

Yes, and a masterclass in this approach is Tracy Deonn's The Legendborn cycle.

The first book, Legendborn, hit like a seismic event on BookTok and the New York Times bestseller list back in 2020.

It was huge.

At its core, it sounds like a classic YA setup, right? A 16-year-old girl named Bree infiltrates a secret magical society operating on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

If you were a high school teacher, you can pick the class, the kind of class you teach, English is usually what people do, but if you wanna do something more specific, you can, what's the book you would assign your students?
Jess LeeGUEST
