And I came on kind of halfway through Fifth Element.

So I'd kind of sculpted Leeloo's orange costume.

That was the first thing I'd worked on.

So I then got it.

They'd been on it for about four months at that point.

So then I was I got hired.

And the first thing I was asked to do was to sculpt the Leeloo costume, you know, the orange thing she wears.

Yeah,

And they're awakened by her coolness.

Leeloo in Fifth Element, a little more of a desire object, but also a superpower and the MacGuffin as well.

So Mila Jovovich is doing an awful lot of different archetypes as Leeloo, but she's definitely free spirit coded and she breaks surly cab driver Bruce Willis out of his funk and also helps him save the universe.

Then the free spirit is sometimes dangerous and scary, as often they are in real life.

Carmilla in Carmilla is maybe the first of these sort of dangerous free spirits.

And it's basically where, um, in...

Leeloo in The Fifth Element is one of the best known examples of this-

... where she kind of pops into being as, like, an infant where she doesn't know anything.

The Fifth Element.

The character Leeloo.

Oh my gosh.

Oh, okay.

I thought Leeloo from Fifth Element.

Now, okay, I got you.

Um, L- Lindsay Lohan.

But yeah.

I mean, Leeloo's eyes are ti- are very small.

They can cover them with a strip of tape.

Yes.

Ooh, she's ugly." You're like, "Hey."

You can see some of the misogyny come through.

There was another glaring instance of it is, um, when they've just recreated Leeloo, and they're like, "I'd like a few photos."

Yeah.

I went into this thinking of AI as two competing futures.

Blame my love for '90s sci-fi, but is it gonna be The Terminator, this thing we create that eventually destroys us? Or Leeloo from Fifth Element, this incredibly powerful technology that swoops in to save humanity.

But after talking to Ketan, I'm wondering if both those futures let us off the hook a little.

They make AI sound like something that happens to us, because right now AI is an infrastructure story.

It's what gets built in the meantime.

Because we don't know what AI will be capable of 10 or 20 years from now, but we do know the carbon footprint of what's getting built to feed it.

And maybe I'll just take a beat before I get an AI agent to organize my life or generate an image of The Terminator and Leeloo hugging.
