Lee County

As I travel from Mount Pleasant where my kids have the great privilege of being in wonderful public schools.

And then I go to somewhere like Lee County where the schools are crumbling and everyone is struggling.

And there should not be those inequities baked into the system.

But we can't just keep testing our way out of it.

This is the Backwoods Cryptid Road Trip, and this stop is South Carolina.

The place we're headed is Lee County, in the middle of the state, about an hour east of Columbia and a little north of Interstate 20.

The county seat is Bishopville, and Bishopville is a cotton town.

It's got a main street with brick storefronts, a cotton museum, a water tower, and a few thousand people.

That part took as long as changing a tire takes.

He got the spare on, got the flat and the jack back in the trunk, and was closing the trunk when he heard something behind him.

What happened next comes from Davis himself, told first to his parents that night and later to the Lee County Sheriff.

He heard a thumping sound, and he turned around and looked back across the field beside the road, and something was running across it toward him.

You know, I live in the South, so it's all him in the South going from state to state in the South dealing with a lot of cryptids and things that I grew up with.

You know, the Lee County Lizardman, this may not even make it to the story because, you know, editorial may say that.

But, you know, I grew up with this cryptid called the Lee County Lizardman, right? That was like a big thing.

Grade school or high school was a huge thing, kind of like Bigfoot, right? And I remember my brother saying, you know, he knew so-and-so's cousin who said he was frightened and he saw something.

So, yeah, I'm thinking being with just a down south and dealing with these cryptids that are in the south and stuff I grew up with and stuff I grew up afraid of and curious about.

So that's what you can expect.

I have never heard of the Lee County Lizardmen.
