Laugh track

What do you do when your joke lands like a martini dropped on a carpet? Well, you add laughter.

The show became the first network TV program to use what we now know as the laugh track.

Recorded chuckles and applause inserted into the soundtrack to make it sound as though there's a room full of people having a wonderful time.

And the technology was developed by sound engineer Charlie Douglas, who would later create something called the laugh box, a device packed with recordings of different laughs and audience reactions.

I'm watching adults though.
