Latino

We were just acquaintances at first.

And there wasn't a real venue for Latino and Latina artists like we just did not see places where artists that um looked like us that had um themes that were relevant to us we just didn't see it you know they had a museo you had a buen amigo but you didn't really see art that like spoke to us or and um And so we decided at that time, just her and I decided that we would try to do a show.

And just because we're just that, I don't know, we just had a lot of gumption, I guess.

I don't know.

You know, no one.

And then I happened to come in as an educator, but not in bilingual studies, not in ESL studies, not in foreign language or world language studies.

I came in art, you know, and There aren't that many Latino, Latina art teachers.

No? No.

It's them lights is different.

It's not That's not my rock on playroom lights you heard Dancing up there and everybody staring at you and you got up you got a whole bilingual crowd you got West Indians you got white people you got Africans you got West you got us Latino Latina, I guess and you gotta cater to everybody.

That's a whole different kind of game.

But I I'm going to tell you

This is Austin Signal.

This Hispanic Heritage Month, we are highlighting Latina and Latino artists that have helped shape the Austin music scene over the years.

So let's kick it off in style with one voice who has made a memorable mark.

The center is a place where we preserve and promote, you know, Mexican, Mexican-American, Latino, and indigenous art.

It's a wonderful multimedia space.

Also, there was an updated term for the Latina, Latino community, and it was called, I might be mispronouncing this, is it Latinx or Latinx? Because they thought that maybe a gender neutral term for the Latino and Latina community, Latinx, we didn't wanna be gender specific.

So we came up with Latinx or Latinx, okay? And that also got confusing.

So we're not saying that anymore.

So they don't want to go Latino or Latina.

They just want to make it gender-neutral and say Latinx.

But the funny thing is, is that when you say Latino or Latinos, the masculine form usually is gender neutral.

Yeah, but they don't like that.

Yeah,

powerful stuff.

So it really pisses me off when stuff like this sort of just gets whitewashed and diluted into the whole Latino, Latina, Latinx narrative.

As if all these people who identify as Latina, Latino, Latinx, many of whom are people who didn't even, their families weren't even around at the time that this occurred.

Their families might've come sometime in the 70s.

And so they have no frame of reference as to the struggles of the Chicano-Mexicano people who have been here on these lands since before this was the United States.

And then for our history to just sort of get, you know, swept up in this larger narrative without any context as to why this matters to us so deeply and how it's not the same.

You know, this isn't Latina, Latino, Latinx history.

This is Chicano, Chicanx history.
