Lathraea

a relative of the bindweed, but even more menacing, this one actually lassoes its host plant, often a gorse or a heather bush, and it strangles it with its cloak of tangled threads.

Toothwort is another, sometimes called the corpse flower, and this one has peculiar flesh-coloured spikes with rows of toothy flowers, and these sprout from the roots of hazel and other trees in early spring.

Its cousin, the purple toothwort, is a real thing of beauty, And it paints the woodland floor with puddles of purple in April.

In fact, some of the larger nurseries now stock this one, so it is worth giving a go.
