Lasher

She can literally kill or heal with a thought.

When her estranged mother dies, Rowan is drawn back to New Orleans and inherits the massive Mayfair fortune, but she also inherits something else, Lasher.

Lasher is one of the most insidious, fascinating antagonists in all of literature.

He is a spirit, a demonic entity who has haunted and seduced the Mayfair women for generations.

He's highly seductive and highly dangerous.

Why is magic so intertwined with seduction and danger in these stories?

That's a great question.

Well, Lasher's mechanics of seduction are deeply psychological.

She suddenly has to grapple with emerging uncontrollable magical abilities.

But much worse than the magic, she discovers that her family is tied to this dark, manipulative supernatural entity named Lasher.

Right, a very creepy presence.

Very.

Think about your own inherited legacies for a second.

Ooh, I like this.

Maybe you didn't inherit a haunted house in New Orleans or a demonic entity named Lasher.

Hopefully not.

Very deeply troubled.

And they are haunted by this seductive, dangerous spirit named Lasher, who has been tied to their bloodline for centuries.

And on top of that, you have this secret society of psychic investigators called the Talamasca compiling literal files on the family's history.

Rice treats the history of witchcraft as an intergenerational saga of sweeping gossip.

Across multiple generations

Right, it spans hundreds of years.

And not just money

Exactly.

They aren't just inheriting immense wealth and corporate power, they are inheriting this entity, Lasher It is a deep dive into how trauma, addiction, and power are woven inextricably into the DNA of a family tree.

But I have to ask, is it really about inherited trauma? Because, I mean, that feels like very modern therapy speak that we are retroactively forcing onto a 1990s Gothic horror book.
