Large Marge

In fact, when I watch older movies with my kids, I'm surprised at just how much nightmare fuel was in them, because the creators trusted that kids could handle being treated like adults in formation.

One lasting memory I have of being scared by a film as a kid was the scene in Pee-Wee's Big Adventure, where Pee-Wee Herman, who's on a cross-country trip to recover his stolen beloved bicycle, is picked up by a truck driver named Large Marge, who we later learn is the ghost of a driver who died in an accident.

She tells Pee-Wee the story of the accident in a way that's chilling for children and cheesy for adults, before revealing what the driver's corpse looked like.

And when they finally pulled the driver's body... from the twisted, burning wreck.

What would you say is the scariest movie you've ever seen? And this could be relative to like, if you're young and you see something, maybe nowadays, if you watch it now, it's not as scary.

Like something like NBW's Big Adventure when Large Marge comes on the screen.

It's like now when I watch that, it's comical.

But when I was a kid, it was like, holy shit.

One of the rare ones, I see it gives a lot of people, also saw it young, it gave them a lot of trauma.

One of the rare ones that didn't give me trauma, unlike Large Marge, that's one of the universals.

The first death scene in this movie fucked a lot of kids up.

When he's getting eaten by the blob, so...

And it set us back months in August sleeping by himself.

Large Marge scared him so much.

Yeah,

yeah, yeah.

And I can tell you haven't watched enough because you don't know who Large Marge is.

No, but it's like, it was like, it's like campy and smart, right? Like it was, yeah, yeah, yeah.

The reason I ask is because I watched a lot of Aladdin on VHS.

Except the middle of the main room where there was this like recliner with this old lady, like very old.

I thought she was dead because she was motionless, but she just had this like completely alarmed look on her face, just kind of frozen, just staring off like kind of like Large Marge and Pee Wee's Big Adventure.

She's just staring kind of off into space.

And when she just walks right, the lady I'm with just kind of walks right past this lady.

And I will say that those moments, again, I feel like there's precedent that we should state here.

Those moments that prosecution doesn't like in this movie, the crazy skulls, the eyes popping out, those are large Marge moments.

If you like Pee Wee's Big Adventure, that's exactly what happened in Large Marge.

The most memorable scene in the entire movie happens when he suddenly shifts to stop motion.

We suddenly get this really weird moment, and that is him doing it again throughout The Headless Horseman.

So they kind of want to have it both ways.

The CGI was painful.

Obviously, Large Marge is stop motion.
