Lansing–Ishii Agreement

The impact on China was that much of the war was now spent diplomatically fending off the Japanese.

The Americans were concerned with Japan's imperialist ambitions, and a compromise was negotiated between China and Japan and reached in 1917, the Lansing-Ishii Agreement.

This recognized mutual trade interests and guaranteed Chinese territorial integrity.

The Japanese agreed not to take advantage of the war to push for special rights in China.
