Ep.2807 Importing Italian Wine to the US with Giuseppe LoCascio of Lucidity Wine Merchants | Masterclass US Wine Market
G
9:27Giuseppe LoCascioGUEST
It really, really depends.
G
9:28Giuseppe LoCascioGUEST
And there are many factors that play behind that, right? So, for example, there are, for starters, we have, you know, regions in Italy, Langhe area, Barolo Barbaresco or Chianti Classico, where you can potentially have more than one producer because the styles are different, because the price points are different.
G
9:46Giuseppe LoCascioGUEST
And this kind of matches what's happening on the marketplace because those are two very large categories for Italian wine.
G
9:53Giuseppe LoCascioGUEST
When it comes to Abruzzo, for example, or Basilicata, it becomes much more difficult to represent, at least for a company like ours, to represent more than one producer and to make them happy.

So we're gonna start with France, 'cause this is really AOP, so Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée, AOP, Tavel, is France's only, uh, designated region to make rosé.
Roberto Bruno - CEO, Fontanafredda (Piedmont, Italy)

but in Italy, and actually this label represents in a way our foundation, a foundation which is related to the royal history of Italy, because Fontana Fredda was founded by the first king of Italy, so the king who unified Italy in 1861.
R
2:01Roberto BrunoGUEST
But a few years before the unification, this king, his name was Victor Emmanuel II, he decided to buy an estate, a wine estate in the southern part of Piedmont, in the Langhe region, in order to start producing wines, specifically Barolo, on a larger scale.
R
2:27Roberto BrunoGUEST
And so this label, represented the identity of the state because it brings the royal crest, the royal emblem, and this kind of design of image remained unchanged across the decades.
R
2:50Roberto BrunoGUEST
And we made some restyling, but in a way it's something which is very, very close to the original image of that label.
17 MINS LATER
R
19:58Roberto BrunoGUEST
So in Piedmont, normally all our wines are based on 100%.
R
20:05Roberto BrunoGUEST
single varietal and so the Nebbiolo based wines are mainly based on, are definitely based on Nebbiolo.
R
20:12Roberto BrunoGUEST
Sometimes we produce what we call Langhe Rosso, Langhe Red, which is a blend between Nebbiolo and other indigenous grapes like Barbera, like Dolcetto.
R
20:28Roberto BrunoGUEST
So it's a more, I could say, a terroir expression and not necessarily just an expression of the single personality of a grape.

Today, sometimes, uh, in my opinion, of course, uh, the base Nebbiolo are much better than some Barolo or Barbaresco, and it means that really the temperature, the weather is, is changing.
N

And I'm afraid that in the future, probably Nebbiolo could be not the best variety for Langhe.

A- and this means that probably if the climate change is going as it's going now, if Nebbiolo 20 years ago, all the producer need to have a long barrel aging to find a, a balance in the wine because the grape will have a lot of tannins, a lot of acidity, and they cannot produce a good base Nebbiolo.
N
22:27Nicola BiasiGUEST
But today, sometimes, uh, in my opinion, of course, uh, the base Nebbiolo are much better than some Barolo or Barbaresco, and it means that really the temperature, the weather is, is changing.

And I'm afraid that in the future, probably Nebbiolo could be not the best variety for Langhe.
N
22:55Nicola BiasiGUEST
Maybe the climate is, is going back and so what I'm telling now is, uh, nothing important.
