Tenzin Gyatso, better known as the Dalai Lama, is the surprisingly social media savvy spiritual leader of the Tibetan people.

You've probably seen him around, maybe giving a speech to the UN or chatting on late night talk shows.

Though our stereotypical idea of Buddhists might lead us to believe that he's a serene and serious kind of guy, he's actually kind of funny if you've watched any interviews of him.

But, for the Chinese government, he is anything but funny.

They see him as a politically subversive figure that threatens their authority, and if the Chinese government gets their way, they would love to choose the next Dalai Lama.

However, the Dalai Lama himself has signaled that he might be the last one.

What even is the Dalai Lama, and why does Tenzin Gyatso think that the succession of the Dalai Lama must end? In Tibetan Buddhism, a Lama is a spiritual teacher and ritual expert.

[clears throat] So these, uh, Lamas, how they, how they do is, [clears throat] uh, they let come and then, mm, I think the monks, you know, who, uh, can read and, uh, [clears throat] maybe some understanding who can read, you see.

[clears throat] It seems, uh, up in the Surakumbu, the tradition is with each deity, if you're going to, uh, retreat, even you have done this, uh, four major, uh, preliminary practices, [clears throat] uh, the mandala offerings, the Vajrasattva, you know, Guru Yoga, and the refuge, Bodhichitta, you see.

My guest today is Tulku Lobsang Rinpoche.

The term Tulku in Tibetan language refers to an incarnation, and we will hear about this more, a Lama incarnation.

Rinpoche's title refers to him as a precious one.

It is like using excellency or eminence as appropriate.

So if you hear me say Rinpoche, it's not using his name, it's respect, and that's how it is.

So I'll be using that, you might hear me say that.

Rinpoche was born in Amdo, in northern eastern Tibet, and at the age of 13, he was recognized as the eighth reincarnation of the Nwantse Lama.

He trained at several major monasteries, received techniques from all eight principal schools of Tibetan Buddhism, and is what the tradition calls a rhyme master, a nonsectarian teacher rooted in many lineages.
