Lake trout

But it was so early and there was still snow on the ground.

So the lake trout that lived in the lake had moved up in the river and there were some big lakers in there.

So we started fishing for the lake trout.

We were using mice, big foam mice patterns.

Well, that's about as good as I've ever had.

I had steelhead that were better than that, but We were catching 30-inch lake trout on a mouse.

And it was a tussle.

The guys up there call it the North American tamen.

Even though we have so much else going on and so many opportunities, fall is a time that cannot be overlooked for targeting certain species or for some of the biggest fish of the year.

Let's face it, those pike, walleye, lake trout, rainbows, they've been gorging themselves all summer as cold-blooded creatures.

They eat as much as they can when they're warm so that they can digest things quicker.

They put on weight, they grow.

It warms up, obviously.

The thermocline is where it sits about four degrees and it's somewhere usually in the middle of the water column.

And a lot of times if we fish lake trout and other things, we'll see that area on our sonar where whitefish and other things are showing up.

But that particular scenario goes out the play in the fall because we have what we call fall turnover.

These are sizable fish.

I took a lake trout, which I think I'm, that's another story here and there.

That's back from our ice fishing and watching those cruise around the water.

I think the lake trout has just kind of become my favorite fish.

If I had to pick one, one of the big, one of the big lake fish, I think one of the, they're just very cool.

The patterning on the side, their, their behavior.

It's still salty enough that having it with a beer is going to be much more appetizing.

Having something to wash it down, kind of to cut the salt in your mouth.

Yeah.

So, um, with the lake trout site, we won't get into this much, but like, uh, the Cisco at there, they're, they can be down like 600 feet.

And so are they seeing it all down there? Are they seeing at 600 feet or is that old fashioned lateral line?

I think it's a combination of things.
