Steve Devine says people got out of their cars once it was safe and started checking on others and helping with the damage.

In the South Island, ploughs have freed around 10 vehicles that became stuck in snow near Lake Pukaki in the Mackenzie Basin this morning.

The Transport Agency says a truck and trailer unit became stranded on State Highway 8 near the intersection with Hayman Road, causing the vehicles behind it to also get stuck.

Riding crews arrived and managed to clear snow from the road to allow the cars through, but the truck had to be towed.
