Lake Highlands

There's a, you know, there's a difference between rural Louisiana and, you know, urban, urban Texas.

And so growing up in Dallas in a, in a neighborhood called Lake Highlands, getting to see some of those disparities, like even if you couldn't name them as a child, getting to see some of those disparities kind of firsthand between rich and poor, Black and white, you know, there, there are these things that bubble up as, as a child.

That led me to the NAACP as, as a teenager, and that's really when I got my first, you know, delve into what does civic engagement look like, what does activism look like, uh, serving in multiple leadership roles here in Texas on the-- So the NAACP has a youth and college division, and so I got to serve in leadership on, on multiple levels.

So that was really helpful for me.

Today I am sitting down with Lake Highlands head varsity coach, I call her MJ, who's also coached with Nike ProSkills EYBL.

So she's seen it on both sides.

We're talking about the different roles, conflicting feedback, and what parents and athletes can do when they don't see eye to eye with a coach, including what coaches can do better.

Oh, okay.

From a high school standpoint, I don't think much has really changed.

I've been at Lake Highlands, this is year six, and I always tell people I'm still in my honeymoon phase because I really enjoy the parents that we have in our program.

especially at the varsity level, very supportive, but they kind of let me and my staff do our thing.

There was a kid that played quarterback at Lake Highlands maybe 15 years ago that went to Harvard to play quarterback.

I never knew anyone from my high school that went there.

Oh, really anyone.

So my fiance's mom is coming out to Dallas to visit us from California.

She has visited us before and flew out.

He's the only person I know who can shatter a Jack Daniels bottle over his head and do surgery on your hip later that week.

He's part of that whole Yale crowd, but a good dude, also a Lake Highlands guy.

Filipino roots, so some Asian Corby would be a perfect gift.

Stay hard.

We have a lot of the other stuff going on.

But we also took on Lake Highlands and White Rock Lake area.

And that is, while it is fairly conservative, not enough.

It's not enough.
