As beautiful as Mantua is, it wasn't created just to be beautiful.

The city sits on the Mincio River, which flows south from nearby Lake Garda.

In the 12th century, the incredible engineer Alberto Pentinto transformed the river into three artificial lakes, creating a natural moat around the city.

Protected by water, bridges, and fortified walls, Mantua became one of the easiest cities in northern Italy to defend, helping preserve it through centuries of conflict.

For years, they had survived the ruling Bonacolsi family holding important political offices and quietly building both wealth and allegiances.

By the late 1320s, the Bonicol Sea had become increasingly unpopular.
