Lake Chad Basin Commission

It remains difficult to establish exactly how many people have left Chad's Lake province over the past 10 years due to a lack of resources, but NGOs estimate the number to be in the tens of thousands.

In early 2026, after repeated calls for action from civil society groups, the Lake Chad Basin Commission, which brings together Nigeria, Niger, Cameroon and Chad, adopted an additional €20 million budget to tackle the effects of climate change across the region.
