Lady Snowblood

She is, I'm a fan of quite a few of her films.

She was the star of Lady Snowblood.

that up.

Then I have Lady Snowblood, the Japanese film that he was very inspired by.

And he talks openly about his inspirations, uh, in the book, uh, Lady Snowblood, and that one's a real fun watch.

And if you like Kill Bill-

[laughs]

... really enjoy Lady Snowblood.

take this, you take Lady Snowblood together, and then that's basically Kill Bill.

And

then instead of purple and black like this film is, in Kill Bill, it's yellow and – I believe it's yellow and white or white and black or yellow and black or something like that.

The series pairs a critically acclaimed film or cult classic with a specially designed cocktail or two.

Cole Borgstad, founder and curator of the series, says tomorrow night's movie, Lady Snowblood, is a 1973 Japanese film that may have served as some amount of influence for Quentin Tarantino's movie, Kill Bill.

And it is, in a way it is...

One thing this movie did along with the next movie, made me kinda wanna s- keep digging for more of this stuff.

Because I remember in the '90s I was working at laser disc distributor in south San Francisco around the time that there were, uh, Animeigo, uh, put out laser discs of the Lone Wolf & Cub series beginning to end with new subtitles and new enhancements to the pictures, and I got those.

But they also put out Lady Snowblood, uh, Hands Of The Razor, and they did, uh, the next one we're gonna talk about, uh, Demon Spies.

In fact, when I went looking for Demon Spies, because the only copy I could find on the internet, 'cause I forgot Farron sent me a link, but he didn't really send me a link, but then I got the link.

Be prepared.

Anyway, my recommendation is, if you can see it because it's bright as hell, Lady Snowblood.

I got the complete collection from the Criterion group.

Some of the dopest samurai revenge movies that were ever made.

It is one of the inspirations of Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill.

And the theme song of the movie is actually in volume one after she kills Oren when she slices, gives her a scalp treatment with a blade.

That's from Lady Snowblood.

So definitely give that a catch.

But the second film is garbage, and everything good about the first film is from Lady Snowblood.

I, I would agree with you there.

For today's recobendation, I'll use it to double as a quick shout out to our friends over at the Devil's Ball podcast, where they were nice enough to invite me over to talk about Lady Snowblood.

Lady Snowblood has a lot of similarities to other Japanese violent films at the time.

It has blood sprays like Lone Wolf and Cub.

The protagonist hides a sword inside a common object, in this case an umbrella, which reminds me of the cane sword in Zatoichi.

And sometimes you don't see blood.

Sometimes you see like, obviously Tarantino was inspired partly by this movie, also Lady Snowblood for Kill Bill, where you see those just like fountains of blood just shooting up around people.

Yeah.
