La Gomera

And so I just rang him back and said, yes, I'm there.

And so I had the fantastic experience of rowing across the Atlantic from La Gomera in the Canaries to Antigua in the Caribbean, December to January last year.

And that took us almost 40 days.

It was by far the hardest thing I've ever done.

And then... ferry to La Gomera which is like a volcanic island off like not too far from Tenerife and then I'm doing that and then end of November I'm gonna do Cape Town did you oh my gosh did you say that in Chamonix I don't know

man that's a lot of travel

yeah so I have two more big travels but then I'm done I know I gotta be more strategic next year on my international travel Like don't back to back, you know, three big travels like for your like last three races of the season.

You know, it's a very slow pace of life.

La Gomera is one of the smaller, more obscure Canary Islands.

And Santiago, the little town that we all live in, is just on the southern end of that.

So it's a real backwater, quite a contrast to southeast England.

It takes time to learn, but it allows precise spelling of many sound combinations.

Ready for a whistling wonder? Question eight, on which Spanish island do people use a whistled form of their language to send messages across valleys? [on-hold music] The answer is La Gomera in the Canary Islands, where Silbo Gomero is used.

Whistle tones carry across long distances and steep hills.

It mirrors Spanish syllables so trained listeners can understand full messages.

Oh, and the main ones we go to, Irish people, Lanzarote, Gran Canaria, Tenerife and Fort Ventura.

And I know some people do go on, as you mentioned, to La Gomera, which is accessible by boat.

But I have they different different personalities the four islands that we mainly go to and and who should go where

yeah they're like a family of cousins you know they are completely different we we meet them at winter a lot of people christmas out there i say four and a half because lagomera which is uh i would be hesitant to say my favorite but pretty much up there uh is it's a ferry trip from Tenerife.

On any particular tips, if people are thinking of going to the Canaries, what's your favourite on any particular tips when you're there where you should stay?

Each of them will have a different set of tips.

If you're looking for the quiet Canaries of long ago, you know, the 50s, 60s, take that ferry to La Gomera.
