The family history that inspired Miriam Sved's new novel
C

but also the history.
C
15:18Catherine RyanHOST
And the history at this time has been fascinating as well, that the peak, which was in the process in this novel of becoming a very wealthy, you know, it's where all the money is, it's where the extraordinary view is out over Hong Kong, and then down on the flat you get the likes of Kowloon, and I think around this time the emergence of the Kowloon Walled City, because this was a tiny piece of Hong Kong, You know, British colonial Hong Kong that was in Chinese control, and it was essentially run by triads on the one hand, a sense of lawlessness, and then families and people getting on with daily life and business somehow on the other hand.
C
15:58Catherine RyanHOST
It was an incredible setting,
M

S
36:17SeanHOST
Especially if you can take a train from Kowloon to Shenzhen.
S

From Kowloon...
S

Sorry, no, not to Shenzhen.
S

From Kowloon to Guangzhou, you can take a metro.
S

And the literal metro line goes from Hong Kong into Shenzhen.
S

Kai Tak Airport - Heart Attack Approach
P
22:08PoppyHOST
yeah interesting
O
22:09OlaHOST
but yeah something again speaking of people's houses once you're done listening to this podcast go and look up pictures of the approach because the thing that's iconic about Kai Tak is that it ran over so long and it could take like it was the runways was extended so that it could land wide body planes so there are incredible pictures of retro 747s coming into land and the like area below it was really densely populated but with some very unique like districts there too so you have these crazy like very densely populated areas with these planes landing into it and the key iconic district was the Kowloon Walled City Which is, I think, most densely populated areas that people have ever recorded.
O
22:57OlaHOST
It was a Chinese enclave in Hong Kong.
O
23:00OlaHOST
So once the British colonised it, basically it was a small area that remained under Chinese rule.

And the nice
P
31:05PoppyHOST
thing about it is that the go-around is quite smooth.
O
31:08OlaHOST
And there were some crashes over the years, I think, but no modern ones where people crashed into the Kowloon people or the buildings around the runway.
O
31:22OlaHOST
I think it was more like misaligned approaches overrunning the runway.
