Kowloon Walled City

We maybe have been assuming the wrong thing.

Was there like a nursing home at one point named Kowloon Walled City? He just went there and

fucked up all the old people.

He told the front desk, hey, I'm a juggler.

So to start, as we always do, I am going to read the blurb, and this one is a little bit longer, so bear with me.

When Mercy Chan washes up on the shores of Hong Kong with no family, no money, and no memories, the only refuge she finds is in the infamous ghost-infested slum of Kowloon Walled City.

Since then, she has rebuilt her life.

working for the local triad as a ghost talker and dealing with the angry and bitter spirits who haunt the district.

The filthy gutters and cramped alleyways of Kowloon have become her home.

But the past Mercy can't remember isn't done with her.

An unusually powerful ghost has infested Kowloon's waterways, drowning innocents and threatening the district.

It claims to know Mercy and secrets from her past that are best left forgotten.

Story of Mercy Chan, who washes up on the shore of Hong Kong during World War II with no memory of who she is or how she got there.

She manages to survive and make a life for herself over the next 30 years, working as a ghost talker for a local crime lord in Kowloon, Walled City.

But now Calhoun and Mercy herself are threatened, and it might be by the ghosts of Mercy's own past.

So for some reason, I keep thinking these books are going to be cozy.

But it's also, they are really great.

It's rich in historical detail mixed with very angry and vengeful ghosts and excellent twists and turns based on local myths and legends.

The twists and turns took me completely by surprise and several rabbit holes to fall down on Kowloon, Walled City and Hong Kong in general, its history.

And you get 30 years of history.

Ngat Sin Wai Village is the last surviving walled village in Kowloon, a tiny cluster of low-rise houses surrounded by towers, completely surreal.

and the Kowloon Walled City Park on the site of the demolished Walled City with a tiny fragment of the original Yaman building still standing.

The park is beautiful and completely misleading.

It's a landscaped garden where the densest human settlement in history used to be.

Pretty much.

Um, what would've been really cool, it doesn't exist anymore, but in Kawasaki last time, there used to be a arcade, um, center that had a recreation of Kowloon Walled City, but obviously much smaller.

But that would've been really cool to see, but it's, um, demolished [laughs] now, so you can't see it.

Bummer.

and the artist talks about stanley and so i was i was a bit weirded out not weirded out i

was a bit confused because there is no stan credited on fear effect but it turns out it's one of the producers and so he brought in john zaplatton to to sort of take on the project with that already in place and stan was brought up in hong kong and was like i am fascinated with kowloon walled city which is a place that doesn't exist anymore and was this crazy place near Hong Kong which was just like tower blocks upon tower blocks upon tower blocks and there was no it got to the point where the police wouldn't even go in it where they basically people took their power from somewhere else just by splicing into it it just looks insane there's a couple of films I think there's a Shaw Brothers film called Brothers from the Walled City

and there's a recent another martial arts film which is excellent set in the Walled City
