It was essentially to teach individuals to confront and learn to contain the savagery that was inside them and then a sort of rite of passage was given to this process.

Think about if youths had to undergo something like this today.

They had these temporary groups of young men who deliberately chose to live outside the normal social order.

Studies have given us this sort of reconstructed Proto-Indo-European word, Koryos, which usually means an armed company, a war party, or a body of warriors.

Native American tribes sort of reflect this concept as well.
