Korobeiniki

It's music, more specifically.

So the beloved melody we know as the Tetris theme is really a Russian folk song called Korobeiniki, and Nintendo decided the melody perfectly fit the Russian Soviet aesthetic of the game.

But what is the original folk song about? Is it, A, a young boy going to market to sell his family's milky white cow; B, a traveling peddler who is flirting with a young girl and hoping to exchange goods with her; C, a sad clown who realizes his lady love is cheating on him, but the show must go on; or D, a group of dancers who are sent to a farm collective to entertain the workers?

I feel like if I knew my classical music better, I would know what all four of those were talking about.

And it's not D because that's Shostakovich's ballet, The Limpid Stream.

So yes, the answer is B, a traveling peddler who's flirting with a young girl.

Now, Korobeiniki was based on a poem by Nikolai Nekrasov and was a thinly veiled metaphor for exchanging sexual favors.

Mm.

The video game music that features music based on a 19th century folk song is [dinging] Tetris.

Its famous theme is known as Korobeiniki in Russian, which roughly translates into The Peddlers.

And thanks to its inclusion in the Game Boy release of this, we all got that song buried into our heads.
