Japan's largest opposition party in the lower house, the Centrist Reform Alliance, or CRA, plans to seek new options after abandoning plans for a merger with two allied parties.

Leaders of the CRA, the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan, or CDP, and Komeito gathered on Monday.

They confirmed that their parties will not merge.

The CRA was formed in January by lower house members from the CDP and Komeito ahead of a general election.

Members of the two parties in the upper house and regional assemblies did not join the new group.

A merger would have brought these members together under the CRA.

Now that it has been ruled out, some within the CRA say it's inevitable for the party to break up into former CDP and Komeito members.

The main opposition party in the lower house is on the verge of splitting up, just seven months after its launch.

The Centrist Reform Alliance, SHUDO, decided against merging with Komeito, citing opposition from SHUDO lawmakers who once belonged to Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan, CTP.

Animosity has grown so intense that the former CTP lawmakers are considering splitting from the former Komeito lawmakers in SHUDO, sources said.

Executive members of Shudo met on the morning of August 31 for final discussions on the party's future.

The leaders of Shudo, the CDP and Komeito were scheduled to meet at the Diet later in the day and reach a conclusion on the merger talks.

Shudo, formed in January by lower house lawmakers from the CDP and Komeito, has been discussing a three-party merger with the CDP and Komeito, both of which continue to exist in the upper house and at the local level.

But the CDP recently decided against the merger, and the three parties have effectively abandoned the plan.

Komeito had been seeking a two-party merger with Shudo if the three-way merger did not materialize.

The Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan has ruled out merging with Komeito in the Centrist Reform Alliance, Shuto, removing a potential obstacle in Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's pursuit of her conservative agenda.

Three Japanese lawmakers from the ruling and opposition blocks have begun a visit to China with hopes of mending strained relations between the countries.

Hashimoto Gaku from the governing Liberal Democratic Party, Isa Shinichi from the opposition Centrist Reform Alliance, and Kawamura Yudai from the opposition party Komeito took off for Beijing on Monday.

The most popular new religious movement in Japan and potentially worldwide, Soka Gakkai, also has a political party under its organizational umbrella called the Komeito, and they possess 27 out of 248 seats in the House of Councilors, 24 out of 465 seats in the House of Representatives, and many more local government seats.

They vote in coalition with Abe's party, the LDP.

This subject is not meant to weigh on the judgment of whether the assassination was right or wrong, but conservative politics and religious influence are two very strong themes of the story, and it wouldn't be right not to address the constitutionality of the issue.
