Reciting Hallel together with the Minyan
G
0:04GoldsteinHOST
How important is it to recite Hallel together with the minyan on Rosh Chodesh or any other day that Hallel is recited? And is it so important that one should make extra effort to daven together with the minyan on such a day, even if in general he lengthens in davening? And should he even say it before davening in case he came late to the minyan and came when they were up to Hallel? So it's recorded in the Poskim that although Hallel can be recited throughout the day, and even b'yachid, it is a mitzvah min HaMufrad to read Hallel together with the minyan immediately after Shemoneh Esrei of Shacharis.

So rules the Alter Rebbe in chapter 488, Halacha 3, in 649:21 in parentheses, the Rama in 422, Halacha 2, the Magen Avraham in 422:6, mentioned in the Beit Yosef, the Kol Bo, and the Lekach Yosef.
G

Now what's the reason for why Hallel should be said together with the minyan? After all, it's not Shemoneh Esrei.
G
1:00GoldsteinHOST
The Alter Rebbe explains that this is in order to be able to answer the prayer of Hodu and Ana Hashem together with the chazan, as initially it's supposed to be said together in a quorum.
G
1:57GoldsteinHOST
This is despite the Rebbeim's general practice of praying at greater length than the minyan.
G

Now while it is unclear from the letter as to whether this applies also to Rosh Chodesh or only to Yom Tov, logic dictates that there shouldn't be any difference between Rosh Chodesh versus Yom Tov in this matter, as the purpose is to say Hallel together with the tzippur, and therefore also on Rosh Chodesh effort should be placed to be on pace with the minyan and say Hallel together with the tzippur.
G
2:21GoldsteinHOST
Now what does one do if he came late to the minyan and they are already up to Hallel and you have not yet begun davening? So we find a very interesting ruling recorded in the Magen Avraham and Alter Rebbe Shulchan Aruch in the same chapter, 488, Halacha 3, that in such a case some opinions say, which is the Kol Bo, that if there's no worry that zman kriat shema will pass, it's best for him to first recite Hallel with the tzippur and only afterwards daven Shacharis, meaning change the order, and this applies by all days that Hallel is said, whether it's the complete Hallel or the half Hallel.
G
2:56GoldsteinHOST
Furthermore, states the Alter Rebbe, the Magen Avraham, the Chayei Yankiv, uh, and other Achronim, that even if you already began davening and you're in middle of Psukei D'Zimra and the congregation says Hallel, then by days of half Hallel in which a bracha is not recited according to some opinions, as we mentioned before, it is best for you to be yotzer the bracha from the chazan and then recite the Mizmorim of Hallel within Psukei D'Zimra, and be yotzer Hallel in middle of davening.
