Kodiak Archipelago

Both incumbent school board members for the Kodiak Island Borough School District were reelected in an uncontested race.

There are still 25 questioned and special needs ballots yet to be certified, along with roughly 700 by-mail ballots that were sent out to villages around the Kodiak Archipelago.

Collectively, they could change the results in the race for three Borough Assembly seats.

In the city election, Kodiak voters have decided that future city managers will be able to live within five road miles of city limits.

Officials and fishermen rely on data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, NOAA, to set seasonal fishing quotas, track fish stocks, and monitor the weather.

NOAA's lab on the Kodiak Archipelago, which surveys crab in the Bering Sea, lost a third of its scientists last year to firings, buyouts, or early retirements, according to Mike Litzow, its former director.

The administration's hostility towards the federal bureaucracy also, ironically, increased the lab's administrative burdens.

"To get on the boat to survey crab requires something like twelve layers of approval," Mr. Litzow adds.

Brown bears are the most widespread bear species, found across North America, Europe, and Asia.

The term grizzly bear generally refers to brown bears living in the interior regions of North America, while Kodiak bear refers to the brown bears of Alaska’s Kodiak Archipelago.

Kodiak bears are among the largest brown bears in the world, and males can weigh over one thousand four hundred pounds, rivaling polar bears in size.

The large size of Kodiak bears is attributed partly to the abundant salmon runs on Kodiak Island, which provide a rich food source.
