I didn't understand it when I read it at the time, but there were all kinds of problems with the text.

He'd lifted passages of dialogue from the dialogue in The Harder They Come, the film, and somehow turned that into Marley's journey from the countryside coming into Kingston.

But at the time, it was a great read for me.

And there was also a Marley biography by Stephen Davis.

How did it come about in Jamaica and why? And the thing with researching the evolution of Jamaican popular music is that, and this has happened to me time and time again, things always happen earlier than you think, or they certainly happened earlier than I thought.

I always considered sound systems to be a post-war phenomenon, the years following World War II.

And then when I was researching this book, I actually discovered that as early as 1939, you could go to Stanley Motta's appliance store in downtown Kingston or the Montego Bay branch, and you could purchase or hire something that was already termed a sound system.

In 2020, reggae pioneer Toots Hibbert passed away.

The iconic frontman of Toots and the Maytels passed away in Kingston, Jamaica at the age of 77 due to complications from the pandemic.

A founding father of ska and reggae, his 1968 track Do the Reggae is widely credited with giving the genre its official name.

And the best money is made on real estate when you buy, like a person said to me, you make your money on the buy, meaning you buy something cheap or into a cheap area, undeveloped area, build it up, and then you benefit from that, whether through sale, increase in rental income, whatever the case may be.

I don't know if you're going to make a ton of money in Kingston now, unless it's in the ghetto.
